Narvaez Named 2008 Teacher of the Year
VIERA— Delilah Narvaez has won this year’s coveted title of Brevard Public Schools Teacher of the Year. Narvaez was presented with the award Thursday evening, Feb. 28, before an audience of nearly 500 people at the Radisson Resort in Cape Canaveral. As Brevard County’s Teacher of the Year, Narvaez receives prizes including a $500 check from the Brevard Schools Foundation, a Teacher of the Year ring presented by Jostens, and a Florida Humanities Scholarship for a week-long stay at a summer workshop. She also receives a laptop computer from GovConnection and the use of a vehicle for one year from Space Coast Honda. Narvaez has been an advanced placement and honors chemistry teacher at West Shore Jr./Sr. High School for five years. Narvaez spent four of her 16 years as an instructor in Misawa, Japan teaching science and mathematics. She was chosen to participate in the Zero-G Microgravity Flight and won the Exemplary Science Teacher Award for Brevard County in 2006. Principal Rick Fleming said, “Ms. Narvaez has such a powerful and lasting effect on students…[She] is the epitome of what every educator aspires to be…she is a very, very special teacher who inspires, motivates and encourages students every single day.” Narvaez was selected after being interviewed by a selection committee made up of current and former teachers of the year, retired school administrators and community leaders. Eighty-nine teachers were nominated this year. From those nominated, eight finalists were selected. “This is truly a magnificent honor for me, especially after getting to know all the finalists,” Narvaez said. “After reading their stories and hearing them speak I quickly learned how extraordinary this selection has been for me. These teachers are such impressive examples of the educators in our county.” Other finalists for county Teacher of the Year were: Karl White, Kennedy Middle School; Sheri Snow, Sunrise Elementary School; Richard Regan, Stone Middle School; Ellen Lawrence, Titusville High School; Theresa Langley, Enterprise Elementary School; Beth Cavallaro, Fairglen Elementary School; and Sandra Blass, Suntree Elementary School.
