BPS Announces Phase I Budget Cuts Bulk of Remaining Cuts To Be Announced May 20
VIERA—Brevard Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Richard A. DiPatri today announced Phase I budget reductions as the district works to absorb a $35.9 million budget shortfall. Today’s $3.5 million reduction, leaving $17.8 million left to reduce in the district’s operating budget, represents the Superintendent’s recommendations to the School Board only for central office and district level support staff (please see attachment). A total of 60 positions would be eliminated with no individual employee losing a job. Six staff members would be transferred to other positions. Additionally, portions of 10 position salaries would be charged to funding sources outside of the operating budget. The School Board will review DiPatri’s recommendations at its May 13 meeting. “Today’s recommendations to the Board mean that no one loses a job,” DiPatri said. “As dire revenue forecasts began to emerge last summer, our School Board took prudent action by freezing vacant positions before the 2007-2008 budget was finalized. That wise move then gives us added flexibility now. We are attempting to be as creative as possible to protect the district’s core mission of student instruction, while also preserving existing personnel.” Officials estimate that, comparing the July 1, 2007 budget to the anticipated July 1, 2008 budget equates to a $35.9 million total reduction; $21.3 million in the operating budget and $14.6 million in the capital budget. Phase II of the budget reduction plan will be presented at the May 27 Board Meeting and will represent the bulk of the reductions, including special programs and other staff. ATTACHMENT
