Edgewood Chosen as Regional Leadership High School

VIERA – Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School (EJSHS) has been chosen by the Jefferson Awards –Deloitte Youth Service Initiative (YSI) as Central Florida’s leadership high school.  EJSHS was selected as the outstanding role model high school for best showcasing the program’s seven deliverables in the Jefferson Awards Turnkey system and for their contribution to the community and their school.

“The Jefferson Awards recognition is a great honor for Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School,” stated Dr. Ken Winn, Principal.  “The credit must go to the student body and sponsors for their enthusiasm and efforts for making our program successful.”

The Jefferson Awards for Public Service were founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft, Jr., and Sam Beard to create a Nobel Prize for public and community service. The Youth Service Initiative, which is currently operating in 80 high schools nationwide, was created in partnership with Deloitte, a consulting and financial advisory firm.  YSI’s goal is to double volunteerism in America’s high schools by creating Jefferson Awards youth leadership teams in each high school. The leadership teams celebrate great volunteers, inspire others to get involved and help raise additional resources to expand volunteer activities in the areas of need.

Only four high schools from across the nation were recognized as role model schools. In addition to Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School, the other schools selected were: San Mateo High School in San Mateo, Cal.; Salesianum High School in Wilmington, Del.; and Gage Park High School in Chicago, Ill.  One of these four schools will be selected as the Jefferson Awards National Honoree.  Student Kyle Eichen and Sponsor Julie Kuglemann will represent Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School at the Central Florida Jefferson Awards Leadership High Schools at the National Ceremony and Gala Event in Washington D.C. on June 16-18.
