BPS Wants Students to SOAR

VIERA—Brevard Public Schools is offering a stimulating and challenging fee-based summer program called SOAR Higher designed to meet the unique educational needs of gifted and academically talented students. Week-long courses will be offered in areas such as English, science, math, social studies and TV productions at public schools throughout the district. There will also be a three-week-long world language immersion program and courses at the Florida Solar Energy Center.

Applications for the programs have been sent to eligible students in grades 4-7 who are officially staffed into the gifted student program, or who have scored 90 percent or above on a standardized test such as FCAT NRT, or who have earned a Level 5 on FCAT SSS Reading, Math or Science in March 2007.

Students may sign up for one, two or all three weeks. Costs and locations vary. Please contact Bob McLaren at 633-1000 ext. 364 or e-mail mclarenr@brevard.k12.fl.us for more information.

In addition to the SOAR Higher program, the district will offer the 2008 SOAR program for K-12 students who are having difficulties in reading and mathematics.  Students who are eligible for SOAR include those students who are performing below grade level in reading and/or mathematics in grades K- 2, scored Level I or II on FCAT Reading or FCAT Mathematics in grades 3-10, or who did not pass the FCAT in grades 11 and 12.  The SOAR program is free to all eligible students.

Three Career and Technical courses will provide internships for 11th grade students in the finance, culinary arts, and automotive programs.  Additionally, the middle school exploratory career course will be available for rising 7th grade students.  BPS will also continue the Summer Fine Arts Program.  Brevard has provided this remarkable opportunity for students for the last 25 years.

Transportation will be provided to students who attend Title I schools and for those students who are eligible through their individualized education plan (IEP) for extended school year (ESY).  School based child care services will be obtainable for elementary students attending SOAR.  Breakfast and lunch will be offered at each of our elementary schools and in select middle and high schools.

A variety of fee-based enrichment camps will be offered at many of our schools this summer.  You may obtain a listing of available fee-based enrichment offerings by contacting the Customer Service Center via e-mail at csc@brevardschools.org or by telephone, 321-633-1000 ext. 500.
