Melbourne High History Teacher Earns Prestigious Selection to attend Presidential Academy for American History and Civics

VIERA—Christopher Carl, a History teacher at Melbourne High School since 1995, has been accepted into the Presidential Academy for American History and Civics. Carl will represent Florida, as the academy accepts only one applicant from each state. Carl will visit Philadelphia, Penn., Gettysburg, Penn., and Washington, D.C., studying the American Revolution and Founding, the Civil War, and the Civil Rights movement, respectively, from July 13 through July 31.

“This is a wonderful professional development opportunity for Mr. Carl, and his selection brings honor to Brevard Public Schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Richard A. DiPatri. “He is a great teacher who is being recognized for his excellent performance. The information that Mr. Carl will be able to bring back to his classroom and subsequently share with his students will be very exciting.”

The Academy is a rigorous, seventeen-day, graduate-level program. Fifty-two teachers, one from each state, the District of Columbia, and a U.S. territory, were selected to participate. With the exception of travel to and from the Academy, the Presidential Academy will be available at no cost to the teachers. Participating teachers receive a $1,500 stipend to cover the cost of travel. Participants will also be eligible to obtain four graduate credits from Ashland University’s Master of American History and Government degree program. They will receive $1,000 of the stipend at the conclusion of the Academy and an additional $500 upon the submission of two lesson plans.

This Presidential Academy will lead secondary school teachers in a careful on-site study of three pivotal turning points in American history. The professors conducting the Academy are respected scholars of American history and government from across the country. The faculty includes two Pulitzer Prize winning authors and many recipients of teaching awards at their respective colleges and universities.
