Brevard FCAT Scores Rank in Top 6 in 16 of 17 Assessment Points for Reading, Math and Science Grades 4-11
VIERA—The Florida Department of Education today released Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) scores with Brevard Public Schools continuing its leadership role as one of the highest performing districts in the state. Of the 17 assessment points in reading and math for grades 4 through 10, and science for grades 5, 8 and 11, BPS ranked in the top six of 67 counties in every area except one. In seventh grade math, Brevard ranked eighth. Additionally, compared to the state’s 66 other districts, BPS finished first in Florida in three areas—sixth grade math, sixth grade reading, and fifth grade science. BPS was second in one area—eleventh grade science. This is the eighth consecutive year that Brevard’s sixth grade students have ranked first in Florida for math, and sixth graders have ranked first in Florida for reading for five of the last six years. This is the fourth consecutive year that Brevard’s fifth graders are first in Florida for science. “Brevard strives to foster outstanding student achievement, and these results reflect that commitment to excellence,” said Superintendent Dr. Richard A. DiPatri. “I commend the students and teachers in our district who worked so diligently to make these results a reality. We look forward to greater success next year, as we seek to lead the nation in student performance.” Particularly noteworthy were the results Brevard achieved in tenth grade reading and math. Tenth graders showed the greatest improvement in all areas assessed. Brevard was tied for first in Florida in the percentage of students passing tenth grade math for graduation. Brevard was second in the state in the percentage of students passing tenth grade reading for graduation, only one point behind Wakulla County. BPS achieved the following FCAT state rankings: (Reading) fourth in fourth grade, fifth in fifth grade, first in sixth grade, fifth in seventh grade, fifth in eighth grade, fourth in ninth grade, and fourth in tenth grade; (Math) fifth in fourth grade, sixth in fifth grade, first in sixth grade, eighth in seventh grade, sixth in eighth grade, fourth in ninth grade, and third in tenth grade; (Science) first in fifth grade, fourth in eighth grade, and second in eleventh grade.
