Technical Assistance Meeting for New Charter

Applicants Planned June 24

Orientation offered to new charter school prospects 

VIERA – Citizens interested in submitting an application for a new charter school in Brevard County are invited to attend a Charter School Orientation Workshop on Tuesday, June 24 at the Brevard Public Schools Educational Services Facility in Viera.  The workshop will be in training room six at 2 p.m.  Topics to be discussed include academic accountability, fiscal management, governance and curriculum.  The audience will be provided with written documentation to assist them with the application process.  A question and answer period will be included and individual appointments may be scheduled at that time.

The deadline for submission of applications as set by the Florida legislature is Aug. 1.  Any interested applicant must submit 20 copies of their application to the Office of School Choice by 4 p.m. on Aug. 1 to be considered for opening a charter school in the 2009 – 2010 school year.  Modifications to the application will not be permitted after Aug. 1.  However, district staff is available for technical assistance during the writing of the application.

Each application will be reviewed by a district charter school review committee, which will suggest improvements, interview the interested parties and recommend approval or denial to the Brevard County School Board.  By law, approval or denial of the application must be made within 60 calendar days.

            Interested applicants should notify the Office of School Choice at (321) 633-1000 ext. 395 if they plan to attend the meeting.  If interested applicants are unable to attend the technical assistance meeting, they may call the Office of School Choice to request the meeting materials.
