Brevard Schools Had A Banner Year

By Richard A. DiPatri

Brevard Public Schools measures success one student at a time.  Measuring progress is at the heart of a great, student-centered school system directed at continuous improvement.  Monitoring allows us to assess whether we are meeting our goals, and helps us improve in all dimensions.

Four years ago, we set out in our strategic plan to be First in Florida. The plan measures progress on 22 areas of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) and various other objectives.  These indicators for reading, mathematics, science, and writing, help our staff maintain their focus, improve effectiveness and accountability, and ensure parent and student satisfaction.

I am proud to say in terms of last school year, Brevard had a banner year!  Our students, teachers, support staff, and administrators should be congratulated for their hard work and stellar accomplishments.  While we continue to strive to be first in every area, here’s our progress compared to the 66 other Florida districts:

·        First in the state in five of 22 performance areas on the FCAT, up from two last year

·        Top 10 in the state in each of 22 areas of assessment and increased scores on 19 of 22 assessments

·        First in the state in dual enrollment (students enrolled in high school and college at the same time)

·        First in the state in the percentage of teachers who are nationally board certified

·        First in the state in the percentage of dollars spent in the classroom, yet 66th in administrative spending

·        Brevard has 95% of its schools earning an A or B under the Governor’s A+ Plan

·        Brevard has the second highest graduation rate in the state

·        Of the nine state music demonstration schools selected last year, seven are Brevard Public Schools.

·        Brevard is the highest performing district in the state in science research, Odyssey of the Mind, and Future Problem Solving competitions

These positive results are what make our teachers and staff so impressive.  We continue to do better because all of our employees are focused on improving student performance.  We have embraced our core organizational values of working as a team to accomplish our mission and serving students with excellence as the standard.

We have found innovative ways to educate our students for jobs of the future.  We are on the cutting edge of delivering instruction for the new millennium by incorporating state of the art technology.  Last year, the district launched a dynamic educational television station, BPS-TV, along with Brevard Virtual School, and we recently redesigned our website to foster additional learning opportunities.
