Course Selection
-
Choosing college courses can be overwhelming, especially for students who are new to the process. The resources below will serve as a guide and provide you with some basic information you need to know before scheduling an appointment with your counselor/advisor for assistance. Be sure to read the important notes at the bottom that pertain to your particular situation.
STEP 1:
Begin by reviewing the A.A. degree requirements on the EFSC website. If you plan to attend a public university in the state of Florida, these will be your general education requirements, regardless of which school you attend. Take note that the course titles are hyperlinked and will provide you with valuable course information including the course catalog description and any prerequisites. This is a good place to start, even if you don't plan to get your A.A. degree at EFSC.
STEP 2:
Next, you'll want to take a look at the BPS Approved Course List for Dual Enrollment. These courses have been pre-approved for all Dual Enrolled students and cover the introductory level coursework for most majors. This list will also provide you with information regarding how each course will be applied towards high school graduation (e.g., AML 2020 will provide 1 full year of high school credit in English). Students wanting to take courses not on this list must submit the course information and reason to the Dual Enrollment counselor in order to request approval from the district.
STEP 3:
Another valuable resource will be the EFSC Class Schedule Search. This is particularly useful when trying to find classes that fit into a specific time/day in your schedule. All classes being offered for any particular semester will be listed here. Just make sure to choose the correct semester from the drop-down menu (i.e., 16-week courses in Fall and Spring), as well as the campus you plan to attend. Most students at Rockledge High School attend the Cocoa or Melbourne campuses, but students may choose any campus, provided they have transportation available to get to and from class. Course titles on this page are also hyperlinked and will bring up the course catalog description. The Details/Instructor link will provide you with the specific instructor for that section.
STEP 4:
It is highly recommended that you visit RateMyProfessors.com before finalizing your course selections. In most instances, someone else has already taken this course with this instructor and can provide you with valuable information about their teaching style. Not every instructor is a good fit for every student. Be sure to read the comments and feedback left by other students. Don't just look at the numbers.
STEP 5:
Once you have determined the courses you think you would like, complete a Course Request Form (available in Guidance), according to the instructions of the Course Registration page and turn it in to the Dual Enrollment counselor. It's okay to make mistakes here. These selections are not final and can be altered as necessary. It is important that you have an idea of what is being offered and what you are interested in prior to scheduling an individual meeting. If you would like to schedule a meeting to discuss your course selections/options, please indicate that in the email.

Important Notes:
-
Online (E-Learning) Courses
Many students who have taken classes online via FLVS or BVS are caught off guard by the structure and format of online college courses. Unlike FLVS courses, which allow students to work at their own pace, online courses at EFSC are structured according to the syllabus and often involve online discussion components that require students to participate actively along with other students in the class. Students must log in to their online class regularly and submit assignments by pre-determined due dates. Students who do not log in within the first 3 days will be removed from the course. Regular participation is a MUST!
-
Evening Courses
Evening courses at EFSC Cocoa campus are typically offered one day a week for twice the length of time. Students should be prepared to do twice the reading (and homework) between classes and communicate with their instructor via email whenever questions arise. While instructors do give breaks during class, the long duration can be tiring, especially during evening hours.
-
Summer Courses
Dual Enrolled students may take 1 course each summer from any summer term (once they have completed 9th grade). Summer A & B begin prior to the end of the school year. Classes taken during these terms may not conflict with students' high school schedules. Keep in mind that summer semesters are shorter, but will still cover the same amount of material.
SUMMER A: Full 12 weeks
SUMMER B: First 6 weeks
SUMMER C: Last 8 weeks
SUMMER D: Last 6 weeks

Early College Students (Collegiate HS)
Students beginning the Early College program in the 10th grade should select two 16-week courses for the fall semester and another two courses for the spring. They will take one class on Monday/Wednesday and one class on Tuesday/Thursday from 10:50 a.m.-12:05 p.m. The Early College bus will leave at the end of second period and return in time for the final lunch.
During the summer, Early College students may take 2 courses from any summer term. However, students may not begin dual enrollment courses until they have completed 9th grade.
-
Part-time Dual Enrollment Students
Dual Enrollment students can take up to 3 classses at Eastern Florida each semester. They may not leave Rockledge High School campus and return in the middle of the day. Students can take off periods 1. 2. & 3 or... periods 5, 6, & 7 or... periods 1, 6, & 7, etc. College classes can be scheduled at any time, as long as they do not conflict with high school classes. As a general rule, if a class has 12:** anywhere in the time slot, it is not an eligible course as this is during 4th period.
-
Early Admission/Full-time Students
Early Admission/Full-time Dual Enrollment students should register for 5 classes each semester at EFSC. Students that register for 4 classes and are then withdrawn by their instructor, for any reason, will become part-time Dual Enrollment and will be placed in 4 classes at Rockledge High School in order to fill their schedule. EA/FT students may choose courses from any term, including mini-mesters. Keep in mind that all classes will cover the same amount of material, regardless of length. Mini-mester courses are challenging. Be prepared to push yourself!
-
Cambridge (AICE) Credits
Students will not receive credit for Cambridge classes until their exam results are submitted to EFSC Admissions to be added to their transcript. Typically, students will complete exams in the spring and receive their test results in the fall. This means they will not be able to take any follow-on classes that require their Cambridge credit as a prerequisite until the following spring semester. Students should submit their exam results as soon as they receive them to allow ample time for processing.
See the General Education Requirements above for more detailed information about how Cambridge credits will apply towards an A.A. degree.

[:|:]ATTENTION SENIORS[:|:]
Seniors must register for any remaining H.S. graduation requirements during the fall semester.
For example:
A student who is waiting for AICE English Language exam results, in order to qualify for ENC 1102 Composition 2 during spring semester, must register for another English class during fall semester (e.g., LIT 1000 Introduction to Literature or ENL 2012 Survey of British Literature 1).
