The Moore Legacy Curriculum began as a call-to-action by The Moore Cultural Complex Board, Inc. and The Brevard Federation of Teachers for Brevard Public Schools to reinstate Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore, former BPS educators and civil rights activists, after their unjust firing in 1946 and to implement a mandatory fourth grade field trip to the Moore Cultural Complex (Moore Memorial Park and Museum).
With the approval of The Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Legacy Curriculum proclamation and resolution on February 23, 2021 by the BPS School Board, the legacy of The Moores will be taught to all Brevard Schools students in commemoration to forever honor The Moores’ legacy with a comprehensive curriculum in multiple grade levels, an 8th grade field trip, and a posthumous recognition of The Moores as BPS Teachers Emeritus. This proclamation and resolution serves as a commitment to our journey of ensuring that racial injustice and inequity are not a thread in the rich tapestry of diversity and culture in our district. As part of our mission to serve every student with excellence, this curriculum and field trip aim to enhance student awareness of the contributions made by Americans and African Americans in American History and the journey for equality, such as local activists and educators - Harry and Harriette Moore.
In partnership with The Moore Cultural Complex, Inc. and Brevard Federation of Teachers, the Office of Equity and Diversity commissioned a Task Force of BPS employees and community members in Spring 2021 to lead efforts in creating the curriculum across the district and additional learning opportunities to advance our student and employee understanding and appreciation of The Moores.

Pathways to Professional Development - Available for All BPS Employees
Harry T. and Harriet V. Moore Curriculum Support Opportunities for Teachers & Staff
Effective November 2021, we have two opportunities available to support district-wide learning of the Moores, as well as support teacher efficacy of instructional content delivery available to all employees -
1. Moore Memorial Park & Museum Tour
Employees may earn professional development credit for taking a full tour of the Moore Memorial Park & Museum in Mims, FL. Employees may attend the tour as a chaperone for a BPS school-approved field trip, with a department or team, or independently. During the visit, you will learn about the important contributions of the Moores in Brevard and the state of Florida, as well as other impacts and contributions made by individuals in our nation's history. Teachers will be able to use this experience to enrich their knowledge of the Moores and implement student learning opportunities. Before leaving the museum, employees should sign-in with their information on the BPS employee-designated form at the museum. After completion of the tour, complete this Implementation and Feedback form. There is no deadline date to complete the form.
-
It is recommended that tours are pre-arranged with the museum by calling 321-264-6595.
-
Teachers chaperoning a trip may receive credit one time during their certificate validity period.
-
Staff can only pursue this in-service credit once.
2. Employee Book Study
Last year we had a very successful independent book study for teachers interested in broadening their knowledge of Florida history and the lives of Harry T. and Harriet V. Moore. In 2023, we will be launching a more interactive version of the book study and using a “book chat” format to have live, interactive, virtual sessions with those engaged in the learning. There will be more information to come at the beginning of 2023 which will continue to serve as an in-service credit opportunity.
If you have any questions regarding the two learning pathways available, please contact Lynnette Thorstenson at thorstensen.lynnette@brevardschools.org or 321-633-1000, extension 11175.
