Good Evening Parents, Guardians and Caregivers,

Due to an Internet & server outage on Friday, I was unable to send the regularly scheduled Principal’s E-mail and DeLaura Details newsletter as usual.  We are down to the final 9 weeks of the school year and only have approximately 40 school days left!  For our 8th grade parents, your students will be off to high school in a few short months!  We have a jam-packed last 9 weeks and we will continue to keep everyone updated on all of the upcoming FSA’s, EOC’s and exciting DeLaura events.  See below for some information on activities occurring in the near future:

    • FSA Writes – FSA writes will take place on April 4th and all students will test in the morning.  We ask that you try to get your student(s) a good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast and have them ready to do their best that day.
    • 8th Grade Gradventure – The final payment collection dates for Gradventure will be April 4th – 8th before school on the patio. This is only for students who have already turned in their paperwork and paid the 1st installment back in February.  We will not be accepting new student sign-ups for the trip as the buses have already been ordered.
      • Gradventure Chaperones Needed!! – We are in need of approximately 20 adult chaperones for the Gradventure event.  Chaperones get a free Universal Studios entrance ticket (1 chaperone for every 10 students).  Please E-mail Mr. LeBrun if you are interested . Only REGISTERED VOLUNTEERS with BPS are authorized to go.  The BPS volunteer website is located at: https://www.brevardschools.org/site/Default.aspx?
    • School Dance: PTO will be sponsoring a school dance on April 8th from 6:00pm – 8:00pm in the DeLaura cafeteria.  Students must not have had one (1) out of school suspension or two (2) In-school suspensions from March 8th – April 8th to be eligible. Please see the attached dance PDF for information and requirements.  DeLaura students only.
    • Home Basketball games – Just a reminder that students are only permitted to attend home basketball games if they are with a parent, guardian or adult caregiver.  Students must also sit with this person for the duration of the game.  Tickets will not be sold to students without a parent, guardian or adult caregiver attending with them. We are hopeful that we can return to the “student section” for the playoffs with some additional teaching and review of expectations for our students. This is a great chance to spend some time with your child at a fun school event.

Have a great rest of the week and Go Scotties!

Good Morning Parents, Guardians and Caregivers,

I want to first congratulate our band students for their awesome performance at MPA’s!  They earned all “superiors” for their performance and once again showed why we have the best music program in the county.  All three groups (band, chorus, orchestra) earned straight “Superior” ratings at MPA which is a truly amazing feat and one not accomplished by many schools.  Congratulations to our music students for a great performance and we are lucky to have such great music teachers! In school event news, DeLaura’s PTO will be hosting our Spring Dance on Friday, April 8th at the school.  Students are currently voting on a theme for the dance through Google classroom and the winning theme will be announced after spring break.  So please “save the date” for April 8th and PTO will be sending out more information as the event gets closer.  To attend the dance, students must maintain proper behavior and cannot have any “out of school” suspensions or two “in-school suspensions” from March 8th – April 8th.  So please remind your students to follow school rules and procedures so they can be eligible to attend the event. It will be our first school dance since COVID19 and we are all very excited!

Just a reminder, Brevard Public Schools has released its annual Parent Survey. We appreciate any feedback, suggestions or comments relating to the school that can help us make DeLaura even better.  Additionally, if you feel that something is going really well, please do not hesitate to share that too so we can continue those practices and/or recognize those specific employees.   The feedback from this survey is reviewed by the school administration, teaching staff and district officials.  The survey link can be found here: https://www.brevardschools.org/2022ParentSurvey

Just a reminder that our offices will be closed for Spring break from March 11th – March 18th and students return on Monday, March 21st.  Have a great spring break and go Scotties!

Good Evening Parents, Guardians and Caregivers,

I want to first congratulate our Chorus and Orchestra classes on the AMAZING showing at MPA this week!  They received superior ratings and once again showed why DeLaura has the best music program in the county.  Next week,  our band classes will have their MPA’s and we wish them the best of luck at their performance.  I also want to congratulate our basketball, cheer and mascot teams for a tremendous start to the season.  They had a great victory over our rivals Hoover Middle and they fought hard against Central.  We are excited for a great season!  As I am sure many of you saw, we now have a full-sized “Scottie” mascot costume that our students get to use to help pump-up the crowd.

In more disappointing news, I was made aware of several groups of students using inappropriate language and showing unsportsmanlike conduct while in the stands at our first two home basketball  games.    Both our own DeLaura parents and those from the visiting schools provided me examples of students not meeting our expectations for behavior, which I find very disappointing as their Principal.  As a result of this, we will be taking the opportunity to provide some school-wide re-teaching  for our students of how they should act at athletic events. As we work toward the next home game, I am hopeful that this will provide a chance at redemption for our students later in the season.

Going forward, students will only be allowed to enter into home basketball games if they are with a parent, guardian or adult caregiver that they will sit with for the game.  We hope that we can return to the atmosphere where students are able to sit in the “student section” with their peers, but we have some work to do as we cannot tolerate the behavior that occurred during these first two games.  On the bright side, this is a great opportunity to come see a basketball game as a whole family and enjoy time with your child at one of their school events.

Lastly, just a reminder that Friday, March 11th, is a student holiday and the front office will be closed.  Spring break also runs from March 14th – March 18th and school resumes on Monday, March 21st.   Have a great weekend and go Scotties!

Good Evening Parents, Guardians and Caregivers,

We had an awesome week with a TON of fun events for our students! On Tuesday, we had close to 400 6th graders attend a music recruitment concert put on by our band, chorus and orchestra students.   6th Graders from our various feeder elementary schools were able to see our amazing music students perform a variety of songs in the SHS theatre.  It was a fun time for all involved!  We also had our “Women in Engineering” event that provided a group of students the opportunity to collaborate with Engineering leaders in our community and work on some engaging activities.  A big thank you to our teachers who helped put these special events on this week!

On Tuesday next week, our basketball season kicks off against our beachside rivals the Hoover Hawks. The games start at 5:30pm and are a fun time for the whole family.  Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students, we are hoping to fill the stands for our teams this season!

Lastly, we have posted the dates for the various state testing (FSA & EOC’s) in the attached “DeLaura Details” newsletter.  Please review the dates and try your best to ensure that your student is in attendance on those dates.  It is always better for the student to attend on the specified testing days rather than having to be pulled from their classes for makeups.  Our kids always lead the county in FSA/EOC’s results for middle schools and I am certain that this year will be even better now that we have everyone on campus! It always amazes me how hard our students and teachers work each day.

I hope everyone has a great weekend, Go Scotties!

Good Evening Parents, Guardians and Caregivers,

We had an exciting week here at DeLaura with a great showing at the BPS Science fair, successful basketball tryouts and some fun lessons happening around campus!  I want to first congratulate all of our winners at the district Science Fair this past weekend, our kids did amazing!  We had a large number of students win a variety of awards consisting of 1st - 5th place finishes, invites to the state competition, special industry awards, cash prizes and certificates of achievement.  Great job to all of our science research students!  I also want to congratulate all of our students who made DeLaura’s basketball teams this week.  We had close to 100 students tryout and our coaches were able to select a great group of athletes for the upcoming season!  If you haven’t been to a DeLaura basketball game, they are a great time for the whole family.  Be on the lookout for the upcoming Spring basketball season schedule posted to our school’s website and in a future DeLaura Details newsletter.

Just a reminder to our 8th grade students that Gradventure paperwork will be collected next week (2/14 -2/17) in the mornings between 8:30am – 9:15am on the patio.  Please remember to check that all of your forms are completed in order to reserve your spot.  Gradventure is a fun event for our 8th grade students as they say “goodbye” to middle school and make the transition to high school.  A separate
Gradventure” reminder email will be sent out to parents of 8th graders tonight with all of the information and forms.  We have a limited amount of spots, so don’t forget to bring in your forms and money next week to reserve your place for the event.

Have a good weekend and go Scotties!

Good Evening Parents, Guardians and Caregivers,

I want to first wish our science research students good luck at the awards ceremony this Saturday night.  I had the opportunity to view their projects and hear their presentations this week and they are amazing!  Students had their projects judged today as they were displayed at the Merritt Island Mall and they will receive their scores/awards tomorrow night at the BPS awards ceremony at Merritt Island High. Great job Scotties!

Just a reminder that basketball tryouts start next week.  All students who wish to participate must have a completed athletic packet on file prior to participating.  If you have questions, please reach out to our girls basketball coach, Mr. Rob Terry (Terry.RobertP@Brevardschools.org) or our boys’ coach, Mr. Ryan Frankenfield (Frankenfield.RyanW@brevardschools.org).  Times and locations are listed in the attached DeLaura Details newsletter.

For our 8th grade families, an E-mail went out with the packet of required materials for Gradventure 2022.  The Gradventure 2022 packets are also available on the school website under the “Clubs and Activities” tab and in the front office as well.  The forms AND the 1st payment will be collected before school in the gymnasium during the week of Feb. 14th – 17th.  I have also attached the Gradventure 2022 packet to this E-mail as well.  One of the forms is required to be notarized, so please double check that it is completed prior to turning in the forms and money during Feb. 14th – 17th.   Gradventure is for our 8th grade students and is a great way to celebrate the end of middle school and the transition to high school.  Please be sure to review the 2nd semester behavior, attendance and grade expectations so your student remains eligible for the trip.

Just a reminder that Monday, Feb. 7th, is a teacher/student holiday and there is no school. I hope everyone has a great three-day weekend. Go Scotties!

Good Evening Parents, Guardians and Caregivers,

I want to first wish our band, chorus and orchestra students good luck at the all-county concert this weekend!  This is a tremendous achievement and DeLaura once again has a HUGE number of students earning this prestigious honor to play at the King Center with the county’s finest student musicians.  In Science research news, our research students are putting the final touches on their projects as they prepare for the BPS Science fair competition next week.  Our research students have been working hard since the start of the year on their projects and we are so proud of their efforts!  I also want to thank our English Department for putting on a great Literacy Week  for 2022 and giving our students a variety of fun literacy-based activities to participate in.

For our 8th grade families, an E-mail came out with the packet of required materials for Gradventure 2022.  The Gradventure 2022 packets are also available on the school website under the “Clubs and Activities” tab and in the front office as well.  The forms AND the money will only be collected starting the week of Feb. 14th – 18th.  I have also attached the Gradventure 2022 packet to this E-mail as well.  One of the forms is required to be notarized, so please double check that it is completed prior to turning in the forms and money during Feb. 14th – 18th.   Gradventure is for our 8th grade students and is a great way to celebrate the end of middle school and the transition to high school.  Please be sure to review the 2nd semester behavior, attendance and grade expectations so your student remains eligible for the trip.

Also, Satellite High and Viera High have their “open house” nights next week. Good Evening Parents, Guardians and Caregivers,

I want to first congratulate all of our students who participated in the All-State Concerts this weekend and represented DeLaura with pride!  We always have some of the largest numbers of students who qualify for this prestigious honor and that is a true testament to our awesome music teachers and their students!  Next weekend, we will also have a large representation of our students playing at this year’s All-County music concert taking place at the King Center.  Our students, parents and teachers put in a tremendous amount of work each day to help our kids become the best musicians they can be and we are truly proud of their achievements!

For our 8th grade families, we are excited to announce that we will be participating in “Gradventure 2022” at Universal Studios & Islands of Adventure on May 13th.  Gradventure is a special trip for 8th grade students from the across the state of Florida where they close down the park for middle school students only.  This is the first time in a few years that we have had the opportunity to participate and we look forward to this special event for our 8th graders.  Please see the attached “DeLaura Details” for preliminary information about this optional field trip for our 8th grade students.  Informational letters, field trip forms and other important dates will be sent out in the near future to our 8th grade families.

Good Evening Parents, Guardians and Caregivers,

I hope everyone had a restful and relaxing Winter break!  Our students got right back into the groove of things and we had a GREAT short week back.  Just a reminder that 2nd semester officially started today (Jan 7th) and we are now into the second half of the year. Some of our students started new semester electives today, so please check with your child and see how the first day went. For our 8th grade parents, the first few months of 2nd semester is the time of the year when many high schools begin sending out information relating to classes and schedules for next year.  Believe it or not, it is time to get them ready for high school!

For our students who are interested in playing basketball for DeLaura, tryouts for the DeLaura basketball teams (boys and girls) will begin on Feb. 7th.  Mr. Frankenfield (our boys coach) and Mr. Terry (our girls coach) will be sending out additional information as we get closer to the start date.  Cheerleading tryout dates will also be announced in the near future but will start around the same time as basketball.  Ms. Marina Rogers returns as  our cheer coach for this season and is looking forward to another great year. All students must have a completed athletic packet and physical on file in order to participate in tryouts.

Just a reminder to let us know if your child is not feeling well and please keep them home if they are sick.  We are trying to keep our campus as safe & healthy as possible, we appreciate all of your help as we continue to weather the COVID19 pandemic.  I am hopeful that we will be on the other side of this “wave” in the near future.

Have a great weekend and Go Scotties!
