• Brevard Public Schools Moves to $15/Hour Minimum Wage

    In 2020, voters in the state of Florida decided to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour by September 30, 2026.  However, during the most recent legislative session, lawmakers voted to move up the

    implementation date for public institutions to October 1, 2022.

    1. Who is eligible for the minimum wage increase?

    Any BPS employee who is currently earning less than $15/hour.

     

    2.  When will BPS implement the minimum wage increase?

    Employees affected by this change will see the pay change reflected in their August 31, 2022 paycheck along with retroactive payment back to July 1, 2022, if applicable.

     

    3. How do I know if I am to expect retroactive pay?

    If you are an employee who earns less than $15/hour and you received paychecks on July 15, 2022, July 29, 2022, and/or August 15, 2022, you will receive retroactive pay in your August 31, 2022 paycheck. 

     

    If you are an employee who earns less than $15/hour and your first paycheck for the school year is paid to you on August 31, 2022, then the increase will be reflected in your first paycheck of the school year and retroactive pay is not applicable. 

     

    4. I currently make more than $15/hour, will I receive an increase in pay?

    Your School Board, BPS leadership, and your Local 1010 leadership are working through contract negotiations, and we will be able to share more information at a later date.

     

    5. Are substitutes included in the minimum wage increase?

    Yes.  Any BPS employee, regardless of classification, who is currently earning less than $15/hour is eligible for the minimum wage increase.

     

    6. My hourly rate is now the same as the employees I supervise.  Will I receive an additional increase in pay?

    The increase to those employees currently earning under $15 per hour is in response to the 2022 legislative session that requires public institutions to meet the minimum wage requirement by October 1, 2022.  Any pay beyond $15/hour, regardless of pay grade or position, is negotiated during the collective bargaining process.  Your School Board, BPS leadership, and your Local 1010 leadership are currently working through contract negotiations, and we will be able to share more information at a later date.
