• The Office of Equity and Diversity and Secondary Leading & Learning presents... The 2nd Annual HBCU Information Session & Fair!

The Annual Historically Black Colleges & University (HBCU) Information Session and Fair successfully accomplished a second year of great community turnout and excitement for future graduates of BPS with over 1,000 people in attendance at Viera High School.

Since the 1800s, HBCUs have served a vital role in providing post-secondary educational opportunities for African Americans and have grown into prestigious institutions for students of all backgrounds and ethnicities.  Since the inaugural event in 2022, this event serves to support Secondary Leading & Learning’s commitment to promote college and career readiness and access, as well as increase participation in accelerated programs for underrepresented students - with a special district-wide observance of Black History Month.  Students and families were able to connect with HBCU College Reps, Alumni and Current HBCU Students who were excited to share the possibilities and importance of college and career pathways.  Sixteen HBCUs were represented, to include Florida A&M University, Bethune Cookman College, Howard University, Florida Memorial University, and more.

Special presentations and on-site assistance with BPS Departments were available for FAFSA, Scholarships, Career & Technical Education, Accelerated Programs, Parental Choice Options, ESOL, Head Start, Brevard Foundation, Adult & Community Education, and more.  The learning for attendees also included edu-tainment with performances from Heritage High School’s Marching Band, Palm Bay High School’s Diva Dancing Team, Poetic Sole Step Team, and two local chapters of Black Greek Fraternity Step Team.  Students and parents were also eligible to receive great prizes for simply attending.  With the support of volunteers, local sponsorships, and community support, this event continues to be one of Brevard County’s most anticipated events.
