  • How can I schedule evening activities and still conserve energy?
    When filling out the Air Conditioning for After Hours Events form, use the following communication format:

    1. Indicate the Start Time that the event actually starts.  The Programmer will add the appropriate cool down time for the facility in question.  If you add a cool-down time and the Programmer does as well, there will be wasted energy.
    2. In the comments section of the form, tell the Programmer "No cool-down time included in the Start Time."  This will ensure that the Programmer adds the cool-down time you need.
    3. Indicate the End Time that the event actually ends.  Most rooms will stay cool for 1/2 hour after the AC stops, which should give event attendees adequate time to gather their things and leave the facility.

    If the event is cancelled, please remember to cancel the AC request.  It is a sad waste of our District financial resources to spend money on unused resources.
    If the weather is nice outside, why shouldn't I open doors?

    In our homes, we can open doors and it affects only us.  In a school, what happened to the air in one room affects other rooms.  Opening one door if we are hot or cool affects other rooms, causing them to become very hot or very cold.  At home, opening a door or window provides fresh(outdoor) air.  In our schools and other facilities, it is not necessary to leave doors and windows open because outdoor air is provided through the HVAC system.  Another reason that doors and windows should remain shut is to control humidity.  The relative humidity of a space is very important to the comfort level of a room and control of mold and mildew growth.  Open doors and windows allow humid air in, forcing the air conditioning system to work harder to cool the building, and increasing the chances of mold and mildew growth.

    If the HVAC temperature is higher or the system is off for a long period of time, won't we get mold?

    Relative humidity is more important that temperature in controlling mold growth.  Relative humidity is the ratio of how much water is in the air compared to how much it CAN hold.  As the temperature rises, air can hold more water, so the relative humidity is actually LOWER in a warmer room.  The worst thing to do is to have a room full of moist air and overcool it...this can lead to condensation on the walls and floor, and a room covered in mold!

    Our HVAC run times are designed to help control humidity.  In many schools, humidity stats will signal the system to turn on to control humidity even if it is not normally scheduled to run.  Where there are not humidity stats, a minimal run time is programmed to keep temperature and humidity down.

    I was first told to leave my computer on, but now told to turn it off.  What is going on?

    ALL personal computers should be on when they are not in use.  Monitors, printers and speakers should be turned off when not in use.

    Computer updates are pushed through the system after hours. Leaving computers on to receive these updates makes it easier on you. Now, the district is using a new system for updating computers, so equipment is to be left on after hours, even in sleep mode to allow for new updates which will automatically shut down the system when updates are completed.
