Welcome!  My name is Candace Jones, and I am the proud principal of Audubon Elementary School.  This is my second year as the leader of this amazing group of teachers and staff whose focus is putting students first.  Before coming to Audubon, I was the assistant principal at Mims Elementary and Andersen Elementary for nine years, and have served in various roles from teacher, reading coach, as well as academic specialist.  I am a native Floridian and have lived on Merritt Island most of my life.  I am married to a wonderful husband, Ron, who is a Lieutenant Firefighter, and we have one son named Riley who recently graduated from Merritt Island High School.  My experience as a parent along with my various roles over the last 29 years has shaped my lens of what our students come to us knowing and how we can prepare them for the road beyond us.  At Audubon, we believe in developing our students' capacity to own their learning and their decisions, both academically and socially. We believe that an effective partnership with parents can yield even greater outcomes than working alone. Our beliefs guide our work and passion for student learning. Finally, WE believe in transparent and consistent communication to keep our stakeholders informed on the great things that happen here at Audubon. I am honored to be the instructional leader at Audubon and a part of this special community.

Assistant Principal

Mrs. Jaime Slentz

Mrs. Slentz is beginning her fifth year as the Assistant Principal at Audubon Elementary. She grew up in Merritt Island and attended Audubon as a student, which makes it that much more special that she now gets to play a role in the success of this community-based school.    

Mrs. Slentz is entering her 20^th year with Brevard County Schools. She previously taught 2^nd, 4^th, 5^th grade and technology to students in grades K-6. Mrs. Slentz served as Audubon’s Instructional Coach during the 2017-2018 school year before being appointed as the Assistant Principal in 2018. She has a Master’s in Curriculum & Instruction and a Master’s in Educational Leadership, both earned from the American College of Education.

Mrs. Slentz is a true native, born in Rockledge and raised right here on Merritt Island. She is married to Coach Slentz, who works as the Athletic Director at Space Coast Jr/Sr High. Together they have four children; ages 8, 10, 14, and 16.

Since introducing PBIS to Audubon during the 2019-2020 school year, Mrs. Slentz is very proud of the positive impact the program made schoolwide. She will continue to build on the program’s success and help cultivate a culture where all staff, students, parents, and community members work together to create lifelong learners and individuals of character. Mrs. Slentz looks forward to watching all of her Eagle students “SOAR” during the 2022-2023 school year to make it the best yet!
