Mr. Ron Shaw, Principal

Mr. Shaw is a product of the Brevard Public School System; he graduated from Cocoa High School in 1988 after attending Middle School at Kennedy Middle School and Elementary School at Cambridge Elementary School in Cocoa.  Mr. Shaw went on to further his education at Mansfield University where he majored in Physics and Minored in Mathematics.  Upon graduating from college Mr. Shaw returned to the city of Cocoa where he began his career teaching math at Johnson Junior High School in 1994.  After completing his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership in 2006 Mr. Shaw went on to become an Assistant Principal in charge of Discipline at Madison Middle School in Titusville in the fall of 2006.  In February of 2014 Mr. Shaw was promoted to the position of 12-month Assistant Principal in charge of Facilities at Rockledge High School.  After a brief stint at Rockledge High School Mr. Shaw transferred to Cocoa Beach Jr/Sr. High School as a 12-month Curriculum Assistant Principal.  On May 10th, his birthday, Mr. Shaw was informed that he would be appointed as the next Principal of The Great Southwest Middle School. 

     Mr. Shaw is the proud husband of Diahann Shaw, a Science Teacher at Kennedy Middle School, and the father of three children: Ronald, a Junior at Rockledge High School, Robert an 8th grader at Kennedy Middle School, and Nahla a 2nd grader at Anderson Elementary School.

Ms. Laura Glover, Assistant Principal

Ms. Laura Glover has been a Brevard County educator for more than 27 years.  She is originally from Northern Indiana and moved to Brevard County during her junior year of high school.  She attended and graduated from Melbourne High School, then attended Florida Institute of Technology (FIT) and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Science Education/Mathematics Option.  She began her teaching career here at The Great Southwest Middle School as a math teacher and eventually moved into a leadership role as the SWMS Guidance Service Professional.  Ms. Glover continued her education and graduated from Arkansas State University with a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership. Then Ms. Glover became an assistant principal at Palm Bay Elementary and then returned back home to The Great Southwest Middle School as the Curriculum Assistant Principal.   She is excited to work with our students and the community.   Ms. Glover likes to spend her free time with family, friends and her fur-babies.

Mrs. Heather Holden, Assistant Principal

Heather Holden, Assistant Principal, is in her second year at Southwest Middle School.  Mrs. Holden has a bachelor's degree in Science Education from The Florida State University and a master’s degree in Education Leadership from Purdue University Calumet.  She has been in public education for twenty one years in Florida and Georgia. Mrs. Holden has taught sixth through twelfth grade to advanced, ESOL, ESE, regular, and alternative students in the following courses: integrated science, physical science, chemistry, environmental science, earth space science, marine science, biology, biology 2, and AVID.  Mrs. Holden has been married to educator Todd Holden for 25 years and they have raised three children together; Andrew Holden graduated from Cornell University and is a lighting and stage designer, Rebecca Holden is a senior at Gettysburg College majoring in politics and English, and Peter Holden is a freshman at Southern University majoring in Animal Sciences and playing for the baseball team.  Education is held highly in our family and it is Mrs. Holden’s goal to support the teachers and students at The Great Southwest so that all students have equal opportunities to excel in a world where education brings each person the power of choice in their life.
