What is the difference between BVS and FLVS?
BVS is a franchise of FLVS. That means we use the same exact curriculum, taught by local BPS teachers. We serve only students in Brevard County and state funding for the student stays in the the district.
-
What courses are available for students in grades 6-12?
BVS is a franchise of FLVS, therefore we offer almost all of the same courses as FLVS. If a student is interested in a FLVS course we do not offer, it can be taken with FLVS. Both BVS and FLVS use the same platform, so the student would still have one log in. View the current BVS Course list by clicking here.
-
Can my student work at a flexible pace?
BVS full-time students are required to complete their courses during the school year, maintaining minimum pace throughout the year. Each course includes pace charts to clearly show students and parents the weekly requirements. Students are able to work at an accelerated pace, to complete course work faster. This should always be done in conjunction with the teacher and counselor, but it is an option as long as minimum pace is maintained.
-
What does part-time enrollment mean?
Being a part-time/flex student with BVS or FLVS means that the student is enrolled in another public school, private school or home education program and they are taking classes online.
-
FLVS offers a Flex program, does BVS have the same?
Yes, we do. We use the terms Flex and Part-time to refer to the same program option available through FLVS. In order for students to take courses with either BVS Flex or FLVS Flex, they must be registered with a public school, private school or home education. For instructions on how to register, click here.
-
Can my student do elearning and BVS Flex/Part-time?
If you student is in grades K-6, they must participate in elearning on a full-time basis only, so the answer to this question would be no.
If your student is in grades 7-12, they may participate in a combination of elearning and BVS. In the scenario, your child would remain enrolled at their school and would be part-time with BVS, using our Flex program. You can find instructions on how to sign up for courses through our Flex program by clicking here.
-
What is the difference between full-time and part-time?
Full-time students are in our BVS public school program and receive all of their instruction through our school. They do not participate in any classes at a local, brick and mortar school (with the exception of select ESE services).
Part-time students are registered and attending classes at a local, brick and mortar school and are taking one or more classes with BVS. Virtual classes can be taken as part of the school day, outside the school day and in the summer. Students wishing to enroll part time should work with their school guidance counselor and can also learn more by clicking here.
-
When can a student enroll in a part-time/flex class?
BVS enrolls students in 6th-12th grade classes throughout the school year and in the summer. We open our K-5 classes for enrollment in August and January. To start the enrollment process, follow step by step instructions by clicking here.
*K-5 classes are only available during the school year and must be completed by the end of the traditional school year (May/June)

What type of technology is required for students to take online courses?
Student will need access to a computer or laptop, a phone will not suffice. They will also need to be able to use programs such as Word, PowerPoint or similar products like Google Docs. District students have the ability to use Microsoft Office and/or Google Docs products for free.
Specific courses may require additional materials, such as a digital camera for Creative Photography (a phone does not suffice) and a guitar for the Guitar classes.
For more information on the technology requirements for computers, visit the site below. BVS utilizes FLVS curriculum, therefore our technology requirements will be the same.

How do I sign up for a course?
It is very easy! Click here to see step by step instructions.
-
What if my student doesn't like the course they chose?
Each student is given time in the course when they can have the full experience but still withdraw with no academic penalty. From placement with a teacher through 14 days after activation, a student can be withdrawn with a request to the teacher. If a student withdraws after this time frame (called the Grace Period) then a record of the enrollment will appear on the student's academic history. A withdrawal after grace period will result in a WP (Withdrawn Passing) or WF (Withdrawn Failing) grade, which does not impact GPA.
-
When does my child's course need to be finished?
That will depend on two factors, when the enrollment began and which course the child is taking. Courses vary in length and each course provide a pace chart to guide learning. Courses could be 18, 16, 10 or even 6 weeks in length. The pace chart defines the expect completion timeline. Students may work more quickly than the pace chart outlines, but maintaining minimum pace is required.
-
How long does it take to be assigned to a teacher after I register?
During the course registration process you selected a preferred start date. You will not be assigned to a teacher before that start date. It is also possible that it may take a few days after your preferred start date to be assigned a teacher, but the majority of the time students are placed on their preferred start date (assuming the student's school counselor approved the request). If it has been more than 3 days, reach out to the BVS office so we can assist you. You can do that by email to BrevardVirtual@brevardschools.org or by calling 321-350-8600.

How do I fulfill the requirement to take an online course for graduation?
At BVS students can take any high school level course to fulfill the online course graduation requirement. The key is to take the entire course online. Whether the course is one segment in length or two, the entire course must be taken online.
A student who takes one segment of a two segment course (ex. World History or HOPE) will not fulfill this requirement. The entire course must be taken, both segments.
Courses that are only one segment in length (ex. Driver Ed, Psychology, Economics, etc.) will satisfy the requirement by taking only segment one, since that represents the full course.
Work with your school counselor to determine the best course to take. You can then sign up for the course by clicking here for directions.
-
My student has been withdrawn from a course, how can I get him/her back in?
Students are typically withdrawn from classes because they do not meet certain deadlines established by the teacher and/or they have abandoned the course. You can certainly contact your child's teacher to discuss if reinstatement is possible. If it is not possible, then your student can reenroll in the course by submitted another course request through their account.

When registering for a course, you will see a course at both the middle school and high school level. The "M/J Career Research and Decision Making" course is available for students in grades 6-8.
