BPS school board hires new general counsel

Nov. 26, 2019

VIERA, Florida -- The Brevard County School Board has hired attorney Paul Gibbs as its next general counsel.

The board voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a contract with Gibbs, who has served as school board attorney in Marion County, Florida, since 2017. Before that, he worked as an assistant county attorney in Seminole County.

In Marion County, Gibbs advises the school board, prepares legal research and opinions, and provides counsel in areas of expertise including purchasing and procurement, human relations and compliance with federal law. Gibbs earned his law degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law in Fayetteville.

“I am very excited for a great opportunity to continue to grow,” Gibbs said. “I am looking forward to it.”

Gibbs is scheduled to start at BPS on Jan. 6, 2020. He will be paid $155,000 a year. Like the superintendent, the general counsel reports directly to the school board.

Gibbs was one of three finalists, among them attorneys for school boards in Pinellas and Polk counties.

Said School Board Chair Misty Belford: “We were very fortunate to have three amazing candidates in the final round of interviews. Any one of them would have been a great asset to our organization, and we thank them for their time and passion. We are very excited to welcome Paul Gibbs to Brevard Public Schools.”
