Brevard Public Schools Partners with Families to Make Big Strides on Device Return

Viera, FL:  Brevard Public Schools, acting on the decision from the State of Florida’s Department of Education last Spring to close schools, was able to initiate a district-wide emergency distance learning plan which included loaning out nearly 15,000 devices to students in our community.

We are pleased to report that to date, only approximately 500 laptops are still outstanding which equates to a 96% return rate. Our families have done a phenomenal job of partnering with their local schools to return the borrowed technology. Our Principals and administrative teams continue to work on connecting with the families who still have laptops which need to be returned so they can be updated with new safety features and refurbished for use.

Initially, the number reported was much higher as several families participated in the free summer educational offerings to help bridge learning gaps and reduce the typical “summer slide.”  The return of these devices helped to facilitate eLearning options for families at high risk during the Coronavirus pandemic and ensure students both on and off of our campuses are able to have a continuity of education through enriching content aimed at learning gains.

“BPS works very hard to ensure that our students have the tools necessary for a high quality education. During these stressful and changing times, technology continues to play increasingly important role in providing our students, staff and community with the instruction and interaction they need,” said Russell Cheatham, Chief Information Officer at Brevard Public Schools.

Brevard Public Schools is committed to working with our families with outstanding devices to meet their needs and maintaining the technology assets we are responsible for to ensure students have the tools needed to achieve in the classroom.
