BPS Celebrates and Honors the Dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Viera, FL: Brevard Public Schools joins the community and nation in commemorating the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 18, 2021. Dr. King was an American civil rights leader, national hero and Nobel Peace Prize Winner who stood up for equality and freedom for all. First observed in 1986 as a federal holiday signed into law by President Ronald Reagan, this day was observed in honor of Dr. King’s birthday (Jan. 15, 1929). In 1994, U.S. Congress passed the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Holiday and Service Act as a national day of service – “a day on, not a day off.”
Although BPS will be closed on Monday, Jan 18th in honor of this federal holiday, many of our schools across the district are celebrating his legacy through a variety of activities, lessons, and events virtually and in-person with social distancing. We will be sharing images and video in the coming week.
