Florida Youth Survey Takes Place Through March 6th

The Florida Youth Survey (FYS) effort is an annual, school-based, anonymous, simultaneous administration of multiple survey instruments to a random sample of Florida public middle and high school students.  Samples are drawn so that data can be weighted to be representative of all Florida public middle and high school students. All surveys for each school level are conducted together in the selected classes (collated to receive a nearly equal amount of responses).

Important to Know: This is voluntary and parents can opt out of having their children take the survey.  Even if students participate, there is no obligation to answer every question.

The FYS Workgroup is an Interagency Collaboration that was formed in 2000, to reduce the burden of multiple interruptions to the classroom for various surveys.  The FYS Workgroup is a joint effort of the Florida Departments of Health, Education, and Children and Families.

The FYS consists of four survey instruments: the Florida Youth Tobacco Survey (FYTS); the Florida Youth Substance Abuse Survey (FYSAS); the Middle School Health Behavior Survey (MSHBS); and the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS).  The Public Health Research Section of the Division of Community Health Promotion oversees the annual administration of these survey instruments.  The reporting and analysis for the FYTS, MSHBS, and YRBS are also handled by this section.  The reporting and analysis of the FYSAS is handled by the Department of Children and Families.

The survey effort utilizes an alternating administration of the survey instruments.  The FYS is typically administered January through March every year, however, the YRBS and MSHBS are only administered during odd-numbered years and collects state-level data, but they do not collect county-level data. The FYTS and FYSAS collects state-level data (odd numbered years) and county-level data (even numbered years).

(Please see FYS Chart File).

  • The YRBS is funded by CDC. Florida has been administering the YRBS since 1991. The YRBS has been administered nationwide for nearly 30 years to more than 4.4 million students. Note: This survey includes sexual behavior questions.
  • The FYTS and MSHBS was created and is funded by the Bureau of Tobacco Free Florida. The FYTS was first administered in 1998 the MSHBS in 2009.
  • The FYSAS was created and is funded by the Department of Children and Families and was first administered in 2000. Note: Starting in 2020 there will be a sexual behavior question on this survey
