Brevard Public Schools Earns Prestigious Cognia System Accreditation

Viera, FL – Brevard Public Schools announced today that the district has earned system accreditation by Cognia™, a nonprofit organization that provides quality assurance for schools, school districts, and education service providers.

Cognia, formerly AdvancED, nationally recognizes districts that meet rigorous standards that focus on productive learning environments, equitable resource allocation that meet the needs of learners, and effective leadership. Earning accreditation from the Cognia Global Accreditation Commission means that the system and all its schools are accredited and that Brevard Public Schools is recognized across the nation as a school system that meets Cognia Standards of Quality and maintains a commitment to continuous improvement.

On a scale of 100 – 400, BPS scored 345.81 points on Cognia’s Index of Educational Quality which is well above the average score for educational institutions of 280.  During the last accreditation process in 2016, BPS scored 250 points.

“Systems accreditation as conferred by the Cognia Global Accreditation Commission provides Brevard Public Schools a nationally recognized mark of quality for our school system and each school within our system,” shared Dr. Mark Mullins, Superintendent for Brevard Public Schools.  “It demonstrates to our community our commitment to excellence, our openness to external review and feedback, and our desire to be the best we can be on behalf of the students we serve.”

To earn accreditation from Cognia, a school district also must implement a continuous process of improvement, and submit it to internal and external review.  School systems in good standing can maintain their accreditation for a five-year term.

Cognia’s feedback includes:

  • “Active and informed leadership by the (school) board”
  • “Structures are in place to engage stakeholders in a variety of ways.”
  • “Parents indicated a strong trust element has been built with the community.”
  • “A strong commitment to vision and mission were evident to the Review Team in all interaction.”
  • “The strategic plan emphasizes the need to meet the needs of every student.”
