VHS Parent Update: April 6

Dear Hawk Families,

I hope you are all safe and well.  Thank you for your support as we launched our first week of virtual instruction.  We were so happy to be able to interact with our students again and I appreciate your support as we transitioned to this new way of learning.  Students are expected to log in daily to Focus to check for assignments and work from their teachers.  Please ensure that your student signs on to FOCUS daily and presses the “I am here” green button to mark that they are present for the day, as this is how student attendance is being recorded through FOCUS.

All Viera High School staff will begin working remotely this week and our facility will be closed, until we are given direction that it is safe for us to reopen.  All staff members will continue to work remotely in order to serve our families and students with excellence.  During this time, we encourage you to continue to reach out to each individual staff member to address any questions or concerns that you might have through our staff directory on the Viera High School website. Your student’s teachers are your best first points of contact for questions regarding your student’s curriculum and instruction.  If there are any questions that you would have called the school for, please email those questions to VieraHigh@brevardschools.org and one of our staff members will follow up with you.

I recognize that for our seniors this is a very challenging time, as senior year is a very special time in their high school experience.  I wanted to provide you with an update regarding prom and graduation.  At this time, we will not return to school until May 4, 2020. Prom was scheduled to occur May 2, 2020.  I spoke with Mr. Draves and he was able to get feedback from our seniors and contact our vendor for prom.  We have made the decision to postpone prom, rather than cancel it.  We have currently rescheduled prom for Wednesday, May 20, 2020 from 7:00-11:00 PM at the Holiday Inn in Viera.  While this is a week night, this is the senior’s last day of school and the best option for both Viera High School and the Holiday Inn.  We hope to be able to have Prom on Wednesday, graduation practice on Thursday, and graduation on Friday of that week.  We are hopeful for a wonderful week for our seniors!

Graduation is an extremely important event for our faculty, parents, students, and community and the culmination of many years of hard work for our students.  Viera High School remains committed to ensuring that we host graduation for our students.  Graduation is currently scheduled for Friday, May 22, 2020.  There has been no changes to the date, at this time.  If a change needs to be made, I will communicate with you all.

Advanced Placement tests are still scheduled to take place in May.  Updates from the College Board regarding Advanced Placement testing are currently being provided via their website.  If your student is currently taking an AP course, please access this link to learn more about AP testing:  https://apcoronavirusupdates.collegeboard.org/students . We also encourage our students to make use of free, live AP review lessons and resources available on https://www.youtube.com/user/advancedplacement.

Students that plan to take EFSC classes this summer or next year will need to meet EFSC testing requirements.  EFSC is currently working on remote/virtual testing via your home device through a third party, fee-based vendor.  Students will need to have a webcam and microphone in his or her device, as well as enough bandwidth in his or her internet connection.  A photo-ID will be required.  Another option for students without these capabilities is to wait until the EFSC Assessment Testing Centers open.  This will most likely be sometime during the summer. EFSC will be opening a link to Request a Remote Placement Test for a remote test voucher.  EFSC will be in email contact with your student during the process, but please allow five business days for processing. If your student receives accommodations, please select that option while filling out the request form and additional processing time may be required.  Please refer to Coronavirus-Testing Changes link on Viera High School’s EFSC Dual Enrollment webpage located under the Academics tab for up-to-date information from EFSC.  If you have any questions regarding EFSC classes or this process, please reach out to your guidance counselor.

Our next SAC meeting will take place via Zoom on Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at 3:45 PM.  Our meetings are open to the public and the link will be available on our website, if you would like to join the meeting.

Third quarter report cards have been posted to Focus.  Paper copies of report cards will not be sent home.  Please ensure that you access your student's report card via Focus and are in communication with your student's teachers and guidance counselor if there are any concerns or questions.

If you are not currently following our Viera High School Official Facebook page, I encourage you to join it.  There are multiple Viera High pages on Facebook, but our official page can be accessed at: https://www.facebook.com/vierahighschoolofficial/  The Viera High School page has the Viera High Crest as our profile picture and a picture of VHS as the background picture.

The entire VHS faculty and staff are here to support you. Please reach out to us if you experience any challenges with instruction.   I look forward to the day when we all can return to our campus. Until then, we will continue to serve our students, families, and communities with excellence remotely.  Together, we will ensure the success of our students.

Go Hawks!

Sincerely,

Sarah Robinson, Principal
