Media Center
Welcome to the MILA Elementary Media Center Resources Site
MILA Elementary provides access to a large number of print and digital media for all of our students, PreK-6 and their families, to support research, learning, and recreational reading. The Media Specialist provides the essential link in this program connecting students, teachers, and others with the information resources they need. The Media Specialist also develops the vision for the student-centered library media program that is based on three central ideas: collaboration, leadership, and technology.
Mission
Providing access to materials supporting the varied needs and interests of MILA Elementary learners.
Vision
Creating a community of student excellence in communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creative skills.
Activities Rotation
As part of the Activities rotation, students visit the Media Center weekly for lessons and activities that emphasize the following:
Access to Materials: Students have access to a wide range of literature and informational materials for personal enjoyment and curriculum support.
Information Literacy: Students learn how to locate, evaluate, and use information effectively.
Intellectual Freedom: Students develop critical thinking skills to pursue free inquiry and expression responsibly and independently.
Reading Appreciation: Our program fosters a love of reading through literature-based lessons and book promotions.
We encourage students to check out books during their weekly Media class
Library Loan Policies
All students in grades PreK-6 have dedicated time to browse and check out books during their scheduled class time at the Media Center. We encourage students to check out age-appropriate book(s) that is at, near, or slightly above their reading level during this time. Parents/guardians may share personal requests or restrictions to be documented on their child’s computer record. This is an option intended to support parent requests during book checkout. Please submit requests through email.
Kindergarten - may borrow 1 book for up to 2 weeks
First Grade - Sixth Grade - may borrow 2 books for up to 2 weeks
Renewing Books
Students may renew books for an additional 2 weeks twice for the same book with the following exceptions:
Books on reserve cannot be renewed
Sunshine State Reader books, and Graphic Novels may only be renewed once.
Late fees and Lost book Charges
Late fees will not be charged; however, fees will be charged for lost and damaged books. The fee is based on the media center’s cost to replace the book. Payment may be made by check written out to MILA Elementary School or by cash.
Ebooks are available through Destiny Discover and Sora. The Follett Destiny and Sora apps are located on BPS Launchpad.
Parents/guardians can look up a student's account to see checked out items and due dates.

Access to Resources and Services in the School Library Media Program
Your school has a wonderful room that houses information on lots of topics, with something special for everyone. That room is the library media center. In it you will find what our school board recognizes as “the center of the educational program of the school. It provides materials and services that meet academic, technical, personal and social needs of the school community.”
In meeting these needs, the media selection policy makes available a wide range of materials on varying levels of difficulty, with something to appeal to everyone. Many religious, ethnic, and cultural groups are represented in the school library, and specific criteria are used in considering items to be included. Because libraries are forums for information and ideas, books are provided for the interest and enlightenment of all students and teachers.
Many of these books are on various reading program lists, such as Sunshine State Young Readers’ Awards, Accelerated Reader, Reading Counts, and Young Adult Choices. Some of these lists also include recommended reading levels. These reading levels are determined by companies that are selling the book product, and they do not necessarily reflect the appropriate chronological age, developmental age, maturity level, or family values for all students. As with all other aspects of a student’s education, parents are encouraged to be involved in a student’s book selections. The books in the media center, whether part of a specific reading program or not, are available for the review of all patrons, but are specifically recommended for none.
Since reading is vital to success in our world, and since we know that the best readers are those who have parents that are involved in their education, we encourage parents to read and review the books your student selects. Come in and visit. Browse the collection of your school media center. You may find just the right book to share with your child.
