The Brevard ZOO and Brevard Schools has joined together for a contest to help teach the public the benefits of buffer zones in the Indian River Lagoon.
Help Protect the Indian River Lagoon!
Join the Student Creative Competition
Students in grades K-12 are invited to participate in an exciting competition to help raise awareness about protecting the Indian River Lagoon (IRL)! You can choose to create a poster, write a poem, craft a short story, or write a letter to the community.
What’s the Goal?
Your project should teach others how we can protect the Indian River Lagoon from pollution—even if we don’t live near the water! You can also share how planting Florida native plants in Buffer Zones along the lagoon can stop pollution from reaching the water and create habitats for local wildlife.
Here are some ideas to include in your project:
How planting Florida native species along the shoreline reduces nutrient runoff.
The importance of limiting fertilizer, pesticides, and pollution, which can enter the lagoon through storm drains.
Simple ways everyone can help, like composting grass clippings, picking up pet waste, using rain barrels, and making sure septic systems are up to date.
How washing cars on grass instead of driveways can keep dirty water from reaching the lagoon.
Competition Details:
Each school should submit student work to Nicole Kuiper (kuiper.nicole@brevardschools.org) by February 14.
Nicole will choose the top 5 overall winners from all submissions, and final winners from each category will be selected. Winning entries will be featured on signs at Buffer Zone sites along the Indian River Lagoon!
We’ll announce the winners and let you know where your designs will be displayed once sites are confirmed (expected around April/May 2025).
We’re excited to see your creative and inspiring ideas! Together, we can protect the future of the Indian River Lagoon. 🌿🌊✨
