Students with intellectual disabilities honored community heroes through friendship, games, and shared experiences
Brevard Public Schools’ Best Buddies chapter at Titusville High School brought students and local heroes together on Friday, March 6, for a heartwarming First Responder Appreciation Event featuring games, interactive activities, and a celebratory luncheon.
The event united students with and without intellectual disabilities with representatives from Emergency Medical Services, the Titusville Fire Department, Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, Titusville Police Department, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Over the course of the afternoon, first responders and students paired up for games, enjoyed conversations, and built meaningful connections rooted in friendship and inclusion.
Best Buddies—an international nonprofit dedicated to fostering one‑to‑one friendships, integrated employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities—played a central role in making the event possible. The Titusville High School chapter continues to demonstrate Brevard Public Schools’ commitment to creating inclusive environments where all students feel supported and empowered.
The collaboration also highlighted the vital role first responders play throughout Brevard County. Their presence at the event provided students with an opportunity to engage directly with community heroes, learn about various emergency service roles, and experience firsthand the importance of teamwork, trust, and community service.
The First Responder Appreciation Event marked a successful celebration of connection—showcasing how partnerships between schools, students, and public safety agencies strengthen the broader community.
