Congressman Haridopolos Visiting Brevard Classrooms

Brevard Public Schools highlighted its innovative aerospace programming this week as Congressman Mike Haridopolos visited Merritt Island High School, home to the district’s pioneering Astronautics and Flight Exploration (AFEX) Academy. The visit underscored the district’s commitment to preparing students for high demand Space Coast careers through immersive, hands-on learning.

Inside the AFEX classroom—designed to reflect a real aerospace simulation lab—students demonstrated advanced tools including flight simulators, aerospace modeling systems, and 3D printers used to create components for classroom rocket projects. The technology-rich environment allows students to engage in realistic experiences ranging from traffic pattern practice to simulated space shuttle landings.

AFEX students showcased the skills they are developing as part of this four-year program. The academy’s course progression includes Introduction to SpaceAstronautics and Data AnalysisAerospace Design and Simulation, and Space System Design, with dual-enrollment options available for advanced aviation and aerospace study.

As part of his broader visit to Brevard County, Congressman Haridopolos also made a brief stop at Jefferson Middle School, where seventh grade history students held a civics focused Q&A session. While not tied to the district’s aerospace pathway, the interaction provided students with a valuable real-world connection to government, public service, and civic engagement.

Brevard Public Schools remains committed to expanding innovative programs that prepare students for the growing aerospace and aviation industries. The congressman’s visit highlighted both the district’s leadership in this field and its ongoing efforts to strengthen the Space Coast’s future workforce.
