Brevard Public Schools (BPS) is proud to announce that Officer Chris Hattaway, School Resource Officer at Rockledge High School, has been named the 2026 Florida School-Related Employee of the Year by the Florida Department of Education.
This prestigious annual recognition honors one school-related employee statewide whose service exemplifies excellence, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to students. Officer Hattaway was previously named Brevard Public Schools’ 2025–2026 School-Related Employee of the Year, making this statewide honor the highest level of recognition for his work and impact.
A proud Rockledge High School alumnus, Officer Hattaway now serves on the same campus where he once walked the halls as a student. His approach to school safety goes beyond security, focusing on relationships, trust, and proactive support that helps students feel safe, valued, and empowered to succeed.
Officer Hattaway has played a key role in fostering a positive and supportive campus culture. He helped establish Rocking Resilience, a voluntary lunchtime program created in partnership with a local mental health organization. The program provides students with social and emotional tools in a safe, welcoming environment. He also introduced K9 Trusty, the district’s first therapy dog, whose presence has encouraged connection, comfort, and a sense of belonging across the school community.
His impact extends beyond the school day. Officer Hattaway created a free summer camp for incoming and at-risk students, offering mentorship, guidance, and exposure to community resources to help support a successful transition into high school. During the holiday season, he also coordinates community support efforts that provide gifts to more than 500 students, ensuring families feel cared for during a special time of year.
Through his dedication and compassion, Officer Hattaway has helped cultivate an environment where students feel supported academically, socially, and emotionally. His leadership, humility, and genuine commitment to students have made a lasting impact on the Rockledge High School community.
