Taking the Next Steps Toward Our Future: Students Talk About Classes They Enjoy and Ones They Plan to Take by Caris Crespo
As we end this year students are taking the next steps to prepare for next year. Whether they are thinking short term or long term with their elective and class choices for next year. Many students think long term with their choice, often taking into consideration how the course will help them in their future career or classes later down the road. Sophomore Sofia Dommar stated, “I’m taking Spanish two because learning different languages would definitely help me in becoming a lawyer and to be able to communicate.” Living in a diverse place it is important for students to learn different languages to make communication and jobs easier.
Finding the right classes to take in the next year can be tough with trying to meet graduation requirements, as well as being able to find a class that excites you and prepares you for your future. Students don't make all of these decisions on their own as it can be overwhelming. Meeting with counselors to plan the year is a major step in the process. Sofia Dommar said, “My counselor helped me to find the right classes and build my schedule to make sure I have everything I need to be on track to graduate.” Making decisions for the next year can be even easier if you find classes to continue in the following year.
Electives are the most exciting part of the school year and day for most students. Most students like to find classes they enjoy and stick to them the following year. Dommar stated, “I’m planning on taking Spanish 2 and culinary 2 next year because I enjoy cooking and learning new languages.” Choosing classes based on your interests can help you to decide what route to go in your career. This can also give students a class to look forward to everyday and improve their idea on learning.
