Elective Spotlight: Speech and Debate by Becca Brightwell
What really goes into a well planned speech? Well in Kristen LaMagno's speech you learn how to plan and present a well done speech. Just this past week Margaret did an editorial on women's reproductive rights. “I chose the topic of Florida’s abortion bans because I’m a firm believer in reproductive rights, and I wanted to approach the topic in a respectful & educational way,” said Boyd.
This project took about a week to complete. “I put about 4 hours into this project total. I created a brochure, poster, editorial letter, and button supporting my cause. The graphic design aspect of making all those must’ve been 2-3 hours, and the research put into it took about an hour," said Boyd “People should join speech class because it helps break you out of your shell and become a more confident person. It has improved both my writing & public speaking skills, as well as made me more attentive to the body language of those around me.” said Boyd.“It was a very good project in my opinion. It sparked a lot of respectful debate and opened my eyes more to other people's opinions. It also gave me lots of creative freedom,” said Boyd.
Speech class is not just how to talk in front of others, but it helps you on how to come up with something on the spot. It is a tool well served after high school and you should consider joining speech class.
