Choir Prepares for their Final Spring Concert by Kinley Cardinal
The Melbourne High School Choir (CHUS) recently had their first and last rehearsal for their Spring Concert. All of the choir groups were able to work on their pieces and the whole choir worked on their 2 of the 3 combined pieces. The director Mrs Natalie Taylor decided to add choreography to some of the pieces. The choreography for their opening song “Thriller” by Michael Jackson was created by Mrs Krissy Smith, this song has the most choreography out of all of the songs and is taking the longest to learn. The choir has been putting so much time and effort into the songs and the choreography for these pieces and are very excited to show everyone who will attend their concert.
The CHUS program has 5 different groups. One being the Melodia group, this group is performing “Man or Muppet” by Jason Segel and Walter and “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction. Junior De’Cornell Burks is a part of this group, Burks has been in choir for 3 years, but only 2 years at Melbourne. He decided to join chorus because he loves the environment and the impact that he and others are able to make on the audience every time they sing. “My experience at the recent rehearsal was pretty fun, this is the second year I’ve performed with a live band and they never fail to amaze me,” stated Burks. Burks’s favorite song to be a part of this year is “Thriller” by Michael Jackson, he enjoys this because all of the choir gets to be together and that there is so much energy in the song itself.
Alongside Burks in Melodia is junior Landon Moore. Moore has been in chorus for 4 years and he believes that the best thing about choir is the energy that everyone brings to the program and how he gets to share his love for music on stage with others who love music too. “Music has always been a big part of my life and I fully embraced it by joining chorus and since then I have only grown my love for it more and more each day,” stated Moore. Moore was also able to participate in the recent rehearsal and he found it as a very beneficial thing to the program as a whole and that it showed everyone what they needed to work on before the spring concert. While Burks’s favorite song they are performing is “Thriller” by Michael Jackson, Moore’s favorite song that he is performing is “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay because it is a song that the whole choir sings and he is excited to see it all together.
The Melodia choir that Burks and Moore are a part of are also performing “What makes you beautiful” by One Direction. The choreography in this piece was created by Burks and Moore. They wanted to use some of the moves that were in the Just Dance and combined it with their own. “I liked that it gave us the chance to be creative and let the whole choir have fun with it and make it their own, we were also open to suggestions on what we can add and take out as well," stated Burks. “I think the choreography in itself is very peculiar as it somewhat transcribes the actions taking place in the song, I believe it was made entirely out of our creativity," stated Moore.
