Mixing It Up with Different Ways of Learning in Chemistry by Caris Crespo
Most students have better engagement in topics when there is something that excites them. For some it may be doing something they've seen others do, others it may be trying something they've never seen or done before. Sophomore Michael Farbsten said, “I like being able to experiment things I haven't tried before and see what happens.” Predicting the outcome is something that comes with time and experience. Sofia Dommar, a sophomore said “Being able to check my predictions on what will happen in the experiment is something I look forward to in the lab process.”
There are different ways students learn, some like to learn hands on, in groups while others prefer to be independent. The best way to learn information and hold onto it is by practicing what you learn. Michael said, “I like the labs I've done this year because they have allowed me to be more hands- on and experiment with my own ideas.” Labs in chemistry allow students to be more involved and truly understand the way science works. These labs even help students to see how chemical reactions work in things everyday. Sofia said, “I've learned about things in chemistry by participating in labs such as the popcorn heating plate.”
Adding fun concepts into the labs makes them more exciting for students, it gives students something to look forward to every week. Labs even teach students concepts that are valuable to everyday life. Sofia said, “The popcorn lab taught me to follow directions exactly as they are told or you will mess something up and there will be a consequence.” Overall, chemistry labs not only make learning more engaging but also help students build important life skills like precision, responsibility, and critical thinking.
