Foreseeing your Future with the College Fair by Tyler Ferreira Alves Hill

The path to the future is certainly an uncertain road that everyone will eventually have to tread, but wouldn’t it be nice to make it just a little bit easier? An opportunity granted to the students of Melbourne High School by ScholarTrek’s College Fair. Thinking of paths after high school can begin as early as 8th and as late as the beginning of a student’s senior year. Nonetheless, the College Fair was open to people from all facets of education and especially those from where the fair is being hosted like Mel high’s seniors, Raj Dashondi and Sebastian Franco.

Hosted last week at Mel High’s gymnasium, the College Fair brought in a plethora of colleges that allowed students from and out of Melbourne high school to get important information about what they were going to get into for their desired schools. It even brought upon the more interesting case of granting students the opportunity to inquire about colleges they were familiar with. Not only were these excellent chances to get familiar with the colleges any student was interested in, but it was also an important event to figure out what you want to do in the first place. “It's important because a lot of kids kinda don’t know what they wanna go into a lot, even if you don’t know what you wanna—or you do know what you wanna do—it helps a lot because they explain everything there,” said Dashondi. “It’s important to understand what you want to do. It gives you a different perception,” said Franco.

Though, This isn’t all to say that the College Fair was 100% perfect as, according to some students, some tweaks could’ve been done to improve it. “The propaganda for it, cause I didn’t know it was that day until I was told ‘cause it wasn’t on social media—From what I saw it wasn’t on social media, and the only information I got was from my friend,” said Franco, and “I would probably say like, maybe they could get students as well from the colleges. I think that would be a really good example because, obviously people who are going to represent that college are only going to say the positively. I think some students to say (like) the whole system of it—Maybe some negatives as well— some positives, just so like everyone can get a whole view of what it is actually like at the college,” said Dashondi.

Coming into things unplanned isn’t always the best idea and anything that can help is something that you should definitely think of doing. The uncertainty, the unknown aspects, and even that blurry image of how you imagine yourself to be could all become far clearer when handed the right pair of glasses from any open opportunity created by a program, a college, a school, and even your fellow student.
