From the very first bell of the school day, sophomore Kodi Pennington feels the energy of game day begin to happen. “Cheer has been part of my life since middle school,” Pennington explained. “Now, being a co-captain on JV, I felt like I had a responsibility to set the tone for the team. It wasn’t just about cheering — it was about leading.” Balancing every day classes, assignments, and the anticipation of practice, Pennington symbolizes the spirit of determination. As Pennington explains,  “Cheer is more than a lifestyle - rather it's a family of wonderful girls and coaches”. Their mornings and afternoons are filled with the focus in the classroom and excitement on the field.

When Thursday night lights arrived, the excitement truly kicks in. “Before kickoff, I honestly always have butterflies”, Pennington admitted. That night, Melbourne High JV football team entered undefeated at 5-0, and the cheerleaders match that intensity on the sidelines. “But the second we line up on the field, the nerves turned into pure adrenaline”. The Bulldogs fought hard and finished 20-6 win, keeping their perfect record alive.  Cheerleaders aren't just performers- they are athletes who bring strength and enthusiasm to every move. As Coach Sarah Bender  will say, “ The crowd loves when we engage with them- show your spirit be CHEERLEADERS.” For JV Cheerleaders, the game doesn't end when the scoreboard does- it's about the MHS Pride they leave behind. As Pennington says, “We don't just cheer we make the game day spirit come alive”. It's a full day of energy, heart, and spirit that never fades when the lights.

Looking back, Pennington says her favorite part was the bond she shares with her teammates. “Cheer is a family to me,” Pennington said with a smile. “I'll always remember the laughs during practice , the nerves before the game, and the joy after” Pennington explained. “Being a co-captain has taught me leadership, perseverance, and how to overcome any challenges with stunts and chants-it's all about the spirit and determination” Pennington said.
