Melbourne High Marching Band Hits The Right Note by Ne'Asia Taylor-Torres
Melbourne High School Marching Band isn't just about halftime performances — it brought energy, teamwork, and music to every football game. Their work was shown every time they stepped onto the field, giving people more than just entertainment. Students practiced for hours, memorized routines, and carried heavy instruments while doing their best to keep the music exciting for viewers. The band met two times a week for rehearsals. People saw their performances, but they didn't realize the effort it took to make it happen.
Almost every Friday, students stay after school to get ready to perform. While they were playing their instruments, drum majors helped guide members and kept them concentrated, while band members played their instruments. Olivia Griffin, a band member said, “Playing under the Friday night lights is amazing, It feels like I get to show all my hard work off.” Band members practiced several days after school. "Practice usually takes 3 hours, from 4 to 7,” Griffin said. Her words revealed how meaningful these performances were for these students.
Crowds felt the band’s impact at every event they attended. From football games to pep rallies. Students built friendships and created lasting memories. Even with the hard work, members stayed committed to show up, perform with pride, and to leave a good lasting impression. Balancing long rehearsals with schoolwork was challenging, but members stay committed. For many, band became more about an activity.
