Mrs. Carrie Friday, the librarian at Melbourne High School, celebrated her birthday this week surrounded by students and staff. She’s been at the school for three years and has transformed the library into a warm, welcoming space. When asked how it felt to celebrate at school, she smiled and said, “It is better to spend my birthday here at school than to spend it at Disney World.”

Becoming a librarian felt like the perfect fit for her, even though she never expected it. “I have always loved to read but I never thought it could be a cool job until the opportunity came,” she explained. She’s also worked hard to make the library more inviting, adding sofas, painting the walls, and giving students a place to hang out, study, or even eat lunch. Along with that, she encouraged students to use Sora, an online library with way more books than the school has on its shelves.

A fun fact about Mrs. Friday is she can actually write with her toes, and they’re ambidextrous. But her favorite part of the job is the kids. “My job is to be a resource, help with essays, or just give them a fork at lunch if they need one,” she said. On her birthday, students gave her hugs and even surprised her with Starbucks, showing just how much she means to the Melbourne High community.
