School Spirit Goes Viral by Kyra Chang
During Homecoming spirit week, there were many spirit days that the students had never done before. One of these was Meme-day, where students dressed up as their favorite meme or pop culture reference. “I think a meme is something that was either on social media or something that was seen by a lot of people, and became known throughout the world for being a funny joke or something to laugh at,” said senior Makalin Elton. This was Elton’s last year doing spirit week and she believed that meme day was a very unique one to have. “My favorite was definitely meme day because it was just so funny to see everyone dress up and I actually couldn’t stop laughing all day,” said Elton.
Elton wanted to go all out for her senior year, but still felt a little sad about it being her last homecoming spirit week. “It feels very bittersweet and crazy how fast the past 4 years flew by,” said Elton . “It’s very sad that this is our last time doing a spirit week for hoco but it was super exciting to know that as well and that soon we will all be in college.” Although the moment was bittersweet, she planned out all of her outfits throughout the week and showed out. “I dressed up as Steve Harvey. Honestly it was one of the only memes i could really think of. I was nervous to do it but then i realized it’s senior year so who cares and i did it anyway. But it was super funny and fun,” said Elton. Putting her costume on that morning only took her 10 minutes. “All I had to do was put on a wig cap and suit and the mustache,” said Elton.
Elton believed that there could be more measures taken to get students to participate in spirit week. “Maybe at the end of the week doing prizes for who was best dressed on specific days and also maybe having a poll to see what the students want to have included as well,” said Elton. She also thought that when people participated in spirit week, it built up the excitement for the dance that was over the weekend. “It’s always fun to see how everyone dresses up and I might be biased but I think this spirit week was the best one we had, so it was super fun to dress up and then have the game and then homecoming,” said Elton. Elton embraced her meme as well as the homecoming spirit.

Elton enjoyed all of the choices, dressing up as Steve Harvey for meme-day and quoting the man several times. Despite this, there were some other days that she would’ve liked as well. “I wish we could’ve had a teacher student swap day but i still really like the ones we chose,” said Elton.
