Environmental Science, here at Melbourne High, is not just a regular class; it is a source of information. And important opportunities for lifelong learning. This is largely true Mrs. Collins, an Environmental Science teacher. With dreams of spreading beneficial information that can be found in Environmental Science class, Mrs. Collins took a spot at Melbourne High and has been teaching for 21 years. This year, Mrs. Collins is most excited to meet new students and learn new things every day.
With past experiences, and going to school for zoology, Mrs. Collins grew to really care for the environment, and the effect she has on it. This enthused her to teach students the importance of the environment, and what impact they have. This class also participates in activities outside of class like trips to the Barrier Islands Sanctuary, the Brevard Zoo, and they have guest speakers as well. Mrs. Collins said, “They should obtain a better understanding of the world, and the environment around them.” According to Mrs. Collins, Environmental Science is important because, “I find that students are misinformed on certain issues, I like to give facts for students to move into the future with the correct information.”
Going out into the world without the proper information is risky, but with this class students may use it beyond and apply it to college. Giving them a feel, or sense for what they want to do with their future. Mrs. Collins said, “Environmental Science provided its students with the CTE credit, a Ducks Unlimited one year subscription, scholarship opportunity, and a wealth of knowledge that they didn’t have before.” [and] a step above for job opportunities, even in college, helping students figure out what they want to do.” Some advice that Mrs. Collins would give to students would be to “appreciate the environment around us, get off their phones and enjoy nature.”

This class helps students prepare for the future, even helping them to think of future educational opportunities. Mrs. Collins said “The environment is all around us, some students have a limited understanding.” This class helps further that understanding, of environmental topics. ENV SCI is helpful because, “they are a step above for job opportunities, and educational gains.” Some advice Mrs. Collins has for her students is to “appreciate the environment around us, get off your phones, and enjoy nature.”
