English Students Learning Art and Poetry by Anabella Mulligan
English students at Melbourne High explored the connection between art and poetry. Led by their teacher, the students studied poets and also looked at some art pieces inspired by the poems. Aubrianna Pressley noticed a piece that really stood out to her, with a lot of color, emotion, and rhythm from the poem. Pressley said, “All the poems [and] art we’ve looked at have really inspired me, I love the colors and everything. I feel like it goes well together.”
During that week, students analyzed poetic techniques such as imagery, symbolism, and tone before going into some art pieces. For the art pieces they really looked at how the colors affected the mood, and the tone of the art piece. Pressley said, “I feel like learning about art pieces/poetry is really helping me understand poetic techniques.”
By the end of the week, they started to wrap up the poems, and all of the art pieces they’ve looked at throughout these couple of weeks. The many poems Pressley has looked at has really helped her in the past few weeks with her understanding of the poetic techniques. Pressley said, “I really like that we did this because it really helped me, I really appreciate that Mrs. Reynolds took the time to teach this to us and to make sure we really understand it.”

Earlier this week, students explored how visual art connects with poetry through color, tone, and emotion. Pressley said, “The project helped me express creativity and understand imagery and rhythm work all together to tell a story.” The activity allowed students to understand how art pieces can connect to poetry.
