Why You Should Take French Next Year by Brooke Johnson
Students at Melbourne High School explored a new language this year through the school’s French program. Tenth graders said the class gave them both a challenge and something to look forward to each day. “Yeah, although French is pretty challenging, it’s really rewarding and fun,” said Kamryn Travers, 10th grade. She explained that learning the language took effort, but students stayed engaged through speaking activities, lessons about culture, and group practice in class.
The class was taught by Madame Courtois, who students described as dedicated and energetic. Lessons included vocabulary, pronunciation, conversations, and learning about traditions in French-speaking countries. “Madame Courtois is very nice, she loves teaching so much she can’t remember what time we leave,” said Sudiksha Nanda, 10th grade.
Throughout the year, students practiced conversations, worked on projects, and built their understanding of French culture. By the end of the term, many said they had gained confidence in speaking and understanding the language. The French program continued to give students at Mel High the opportunity to learn a new language while building skills they could use in the future.
