NHS Brings Joy Through Creativity by Ayaana Gupta

For the monthly NHS meeting, students recently received a project that expressed their creativity by making handmade origami for seniors who receive Meals On Wheels at Aging Matters in Brevard. NHS members had a month until the next meeting to complete their origami. Sophomore Isabella Vargas stated why she believes this is an important thing to do for our community: “I feel like giving back to the seniors will allow us to show them the values of NHS.” The project is designed to bring some joy to seniors during meal deliveries.

Many NHS members begun working on their 3 pieces of origami after the meeting. Sophomore Trishala Joshi mentioned “I’ve made a variety of different types of origami, like a swan and a piano. This way, there will be a variety of different creations, instead of just common items.” Vargas added, “I will create something colorful and uplifting like tulips and birds”. For many students, this service project is also about practicing the four NHS values: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character. Joshi explained, “ I think this project has a little bit of everything, but especially character and service. It may not be a life saving thing for the receivers, but it'll brighten their day.”

These NHS members hoped that these creations will create a positive memory and bring a smile to each senior’s day. Vargas said, “I hope the seniors feel happy, grateful, valued, and supported by younger people.” Joshi connected the core idea of this project to a previous one. “Just as the card recipients for February's service project felt touched by the simple cards, the seniors will also appreciate the gift.” Overall, this project helped members reflect on the idea that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone's life.
