Cultural Engagement: The IB Greece Trip by Lily Hock and Aiden Kehayias

The IB program spent Spring break on a trip to Greece where they saw historic sights, beautiful scenery, and had fun. This was an opportunity for students to broaden their perspectives and see different cultures. Greece is full of historic ruins, monuments, and islands which helped students learn about the country and its past.

The International Baccalaureate program was designed to prepare students for college by offering difficult classes which teach hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Junior Gabriealla Stevens joined the IB program as a way to get ready for college and challenge herself. “ I heard I could get bright futures and it was a good way for me to prepare for college,” Stevens said. This program has held students to a higher standard by requiring them to take on a heavier workload and complex projects. Lauren Deacon said,  “The teachers are great and all my friends are in it, we have a great time.” This trip was not only a fun vacation for students, but also a learning experience which exposed them to different perspectives. “Traveling is important to immerse yourself and experience different cultures,” Deacon said.

The IB program spent their Spring Break in a country full of history and culture which broadened students perspectives on the world and different places. It followed the style of the program by being a learning experience and encouraging students to go out of their comfort zones.

Greece, the birthplace of the Democratic system and the destination of the IB Program’s trip this past Spring break. The trip lasted a total of ten days and the group visited multiple destinations. The first being Athens. Ms. Canoes and Mrs. Mason chaperoned the trip for a number of students wanting to be immersed into a different and ancient culture, one being Carson Devitt.

Devitt was quite excited about the trip, what interested him most about Greece was “the gods and the whole mythology…” said Devitt. Devitt also added that he wanted “...to visit a lot of the structures” in Greece as well since that was the point of the IB Program heading over. The Program went to Greece to “be immersed in different cultures besides the U.S.” said Devitt, he was especially excited about “the food and history” said Devitt. An often forgotten part in discussions about Greece, they have many unique aspects besides just their old gods and mythology, they have many famous foods such as Pita and Gyros, along side the landmarks present in Greece, such as the Parthenon atop the Acropolis. Greece was and is a large and important chapter of human history.

The purpose IB Greece trip was to immerse the students in Greek culture. A culture many don’t know much about beyond the Pantheon of old. The students were able to learn much about ancient history and the current Greek culture. The students and chaperones had a trip so few will be able to enjoy in their lives, and so they will cherish their time in Greece.
