Opinion Piece: Students' Sleep Schedule by Madison Davis
Do you feel like you get enough sleep at night? Well students at Melbourne Senior High don’t feel like they are. Student Bailey Ballard said “ I get 4-6 hours of sleep every night due to the amount of homework and stress I have for school.” This may see, like a none issue to a lot of people, but sleep deprivation is a big issue, a lot of young students are facing today. A lot of students like Bailey Ballard say how it is critical these students need 8 hours of sleep every night to function, but between students who play sports, work, or even take care of their family these students aren’t getting that. Student Bailey Ballard said “ I play basketball and I work 4 days a week and I can’t keep up.” Bailey has so much pressure on her which is also caused by stress for going into college and the amount of school work and some might say schools put pressure on these students.
Student Kegan McDonald also said “I work everyday after school, I don’t have time for homework, which leads me to falling behind most days.” These students such as Kegan and Bailey who need to work to survive can’t keep up, where does that place them and who is helping them? Some people may say schools are not taking these students into consideration, and then dumping college, requirements and high school on them. Bailey Ballard agreed and said, "I feel as if I’m not seen and because I have to work I'm different from other students. I'm not getting the same treatment or help as others.” Students like Ballard feel as if they don’t have a chance to get everything they need done at a suitable time and get the 8 hours of sleep they need. Some could say that these students need less work or more time in school to complete it. Such as Bailey Ballard who said, “Schools aren’t doing enough to help with are work load.”. And by not allowing them to have time for work making them stay up later is critical to their learning ability and mental health. So in the end what can the schools be doing to help these students in need?
