In 10th grade, students continue their journey of self-discovery and future planning. While many still may not know exactly what they want to be, they are now equipped with tools and experiences that help them explore meaningful possibilities. The Career Research and Decision Making (CRDM) course is a cornerstone of Brevard Public Schools’ College and Career Readiness initiative, now offered in 10th grade to better align with student developmental milestones and district progression plans.

This course encourages students to reflect on their learning styles, leadership traits, and personal interests, while refining essential skills such as time management, organization, public speaking, and note-taking. Students investigate career fields matched to their interests, exploring job responsibilities, postsecondary education requirements, and employment outlooks. They also learn how to write resumes, conduct job searches, and participate in interviews.

A key enhancement to the course is the integration of Xello, Brevard’s K–12 digital career readiness platform. Through Xello, students engage in interactive lessons and personalized planning that help them visualize their future and build actionable steps toward it. These lessons are embedded into the curriculum and accessible through Canvas, Brevard’s learning management system, which mirrors the platforms used by most national colleges and universities.

Students will also develop financial literacy skills, considering the costs associated with their imagined future lifestyle. Once students identify potential career paths, they research the postsecondary education needed to pursue them—exploring institutions, application processes, financial aid, and scholarships.

By the end of the course, students will have a clearer picture of life after high school and will be better prepared to plan their remaining high school years. The activities in this course help students organize their academic schedules to align with their career goals, making high school more relevant and purposeful.

Brevard County high schools offer a wide array of exciting programs and opportunities. This course ensures that every student is aware of what’s available and empowered to make informed decisions. Upon completion, students will be better prepared to pursue success in the workplace, career education, or postsecondary degree programs.

Destiny is no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.
