Director Environmental Health & Safety Engineer

Jim Powers 

Fire Inspector 1, Asbestos Professional, Limited Lawn and Ornamental Pest.

Mr. Powers has been employed in his current position since 1997 and has eight additional/prior year’s work experience with a Florida-based private environmental consulting and testing firm. Mr. Powers has a B.S. degree in Criminology from Florida State University. He holds a Fire Safety Inspector I Certification, is a Certified Playground Safety Inspector, and certification for Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. He is responsible for the district’s asbestos programs as the Local Education Agency designee and holds Asbestos Contractor/Supervisor, Asbestos Inspector, and Asbestos Management Planner certifications. He has additional programmatic responsibility for fire detection and suppression systems, hazardous materials management, petroleum storage tanks and contamination assessments, lead and radon testing and abatement, pollution prevention and recycling. As a leader of the EH&S and Central Custodial Services Team, Mr. Powers is responsible for daily operations, staff supervision, and project management. His organizational strengths include employee motivation and time management.

Steven Griffin

Steven Griffin began his career with Brevard Public Schools in July 2015 in the Plant Operations Department. Prior to joining the District, he was employed by Eastern Florida State College, where he served for seven years as a member of the institution’s Safety Committee, contributing to campus safety initiatives and compliance efforts.

Mr. Griffin earned his Associate of Arts degree from Eastern Florida State College and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Central Florida in 2014. He later obtained his Master’s degree from Western Governors University (WGU), further strengthening his expertise in organizational leadership and safety management.

Daniel Curiale

Dan Curiale began his career with Brevard Public Schools in 2013 as a part-time custodian at Harbor City Elementary after relocating to Melbourne, Florida from his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. During his time at Harbor City, he quickly developed a strong understanding of the vital role custodians play in protecting the health, safety, and well-being of students and staff.

In 2014, Mr. Curiale was promoted to Head Custodian at Meadowlane Primary School. There, he worked closely alongside his team to maintain the facility to high custodial standards while fostering a clean, safe, and welcoming learning environment. His leadership and commitment to excellence earned him the distinction of Employee of the Year.

In 2015, he advanced to Plant Operations Central Custodial Services as a Custodial Trainer, where he supported districtwide custodial development and best practices. Continuing his focus on student safety and facility standards, Mr. Curiale was later promoted to Environmental Specialist. In this role, he is responsible for inspecting school facilities and ensuring the campuses he once helped maintain remain safe, compliant, and supportive learning environments.

Chris Graham

Fire Safety Inspector 2, Asbestos Professional, Limited Lawn and Ornamental Pest.

Christopher Graham joined the Environmental Health & Safety team bringing over 20 years of experience across the manufacturing, industrial, and transportation sectors. A proud United States Marine Corps veteran, Mr. Graham has built his career around safety, compliance, and operational excellence.

He previously held national certification as an EMT-B and has earned certifications in MSHA, MARSEC, and other safety-related disciplines. His diverse background and hands-on field experience provide valuable expertise in supporting Brevard Public Schools’ commitment to maintaining safe, compliant, and well-managed facilities for students and staff.

Keith Taylor 

Fire Safety Inspector 2, Limited Lawn and Ornamental Pest, Mold Remediator/Assessor

Keith Taylor serves as a Fire Safety Inspector II for the Environmental Health & Safety Department. He holds certifications in Limited Lawn and Ornamental Pest Control as well as Mold Remediation and Assessment, supporting districtwide environmental and life safety compliance.

Mr. Taylor began his career with Brevard Public Schools in March 2012 in the Roofing Department before transferring to Environmental Health & Safety in March 2018. He is both Florida and Maryland certified as a Firefighter and is a Roofing Consultant Institute (RCI) Certified Roofing Observer.

A dedicated member of the fire service community, Mr. Taylor has volunteered with Brevard County Fire Rescue at the Mims Volunteer Fire Department since 2008, where he has served in leadership roles including Captain, Chief, and currently Deputy Chief. Prior to relocating to Florida in 2000, he served with the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department in Montgomery County, Maryland beginning in 1988, achieving the rank of Captain.

His extensive background in fire service, roofing systems, and environmental safety provides valuable expertise in protecting Brevard Public Schools’ students, staff, and facilities.

Doreen Miller

Doreen Miller joined Brevard Public Schools in 2014 after relocating from Indiana, bringing with her extensive experience from the elementary education sector. She transitioned to Plant Operations, where she plays an essential role in supporting daily departmental operations with a strong focus on organization, accuracy, and attention to detail.

As the Administrative Assistant supporting the Permitting Department, Ms. Miller is responsible for processing permits, coordinating with contractors, organizing documentation, and maintaining schedules to ensure projects move forward efficiently and in compliance with district guidelines. Her knowledge of procedures and commitment to precision help ensure regulatory requirements are met and timelines are maintained.

Ms. Miller’s professionalism, organizational expertise, and dedication make her a vital member of the Plant Operations and Environmental Health & Safety support team.
