Helping Students Stay Present, Focused, and Ready to Learn
Posted August 12, 2025

Hey BPS families! We’ve got an important update to share as we kick off the new school year. The Brevard County School Board has officially expanded the Wireless Communication Device (WCD) Policy to include all students in grades K–12. That’s right—this policy now applies to every student across our district, not just those in elementary and middle school.

So, What’s Changing?

Students can still bring their phones and other wireless devices to school—but here’s the key:

• Devices must be turned off or silenced and kept out of sight from the moment the first bell rings until the end of the school day.
• This includes lunch, hallway transitions, and any non-instructional time.
• Exceptions will be made for medical needs or emergencies.

The goal? To help students stay focused, reduce distractions, and build stronger connections in the classroom.

What About High School Tech?

For our high school students (grades 9–12 only), the conversation is still evolving. The School Board is exploring how to best manage laptops, iPads, and other instructional tech tools. They’re looking at options that give teachers flexibility while keeping learning front and center.

Why This Matters

“This policy is about getting kids off their phones and back into the moment,” said Superintendent Dr. Mark Rendell. “We want students focused, connected, and engaged—not distracted by screens.”

School Board Chair Gene Trent added, “This is a step toward stronger school communities and better learning habits. We’re committed to working with teachers and families to find the right balance.”

What’s Next?

As we settle into the school year, BPS will continue refining the policy based on feedback from educators, students, and families. We’ll keep you updated with any changes or clarifications.

Thanks for partnering with us to create learning environments where students can truly thrive. Let’s make this year one of connection, growth, and success—on and off the screen.
