What is AVID?

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a global nonprofit organization designed to increase the number of students who enroll and succeed in higher education and in their lives beyond high school by helping them to develop college and career readiness skills.

AVID is an application based academic elective class that places special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills.

AVID is implemented in more than 7,000 schools in 47 states across the U.S., plus schools in Department of Defense Education, Canada, and Australia. AVID impacts more than 2 million students in grades K–12 and 62 post-secondary institutions.

AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

How Does it Work?

Tutorials are the cornerstone of the AVID Elective class, and they impart necessary 21st century skills to prepare students for college, career, and future success. Tutorials are a collaborative environment in which students use the inquiry process and Socratic dialogue to address Points of Confusion from their content classes in order to come to a more complete understanding of what they are learning.
